KRNL386.exe is killing me

Hi all.
Another one. Lately, without any warning, be it only a few minutes into a session or an hour or more into an internet surfing experience up jumps a screen telling me an error has occurred under KRNL 386.exe and all goes pear shaped.
This is getting worse every day. Even the shut down does not work when this happens. The only way to close down is a push of the "big" button.
Virus check shows all clear. Adaware likewise. Sygate firewall does not show an attack.
I have made a number of Google checks but to me the answers do not clarify anything, broad spectrum techno talk. (I feel so inadequate I think I will have an attack of the vapors now!)

Hi Nick.
The only problem is that ME has been getting more and more flakey over the past weeks and this is only one of the problems that surfaced, but it is now the major problem.
I tried today to load ME over it's self as I have done a couple of times before and it has fixed things, but this time it will not even let me do that.
I think I will have to envoke my Ghost from the last backup November 03.
I know I should have made a more recent Ghost, but this will have to do.
Too bad. It would have been nice to be able to put a finger onto the cause
Regards
