OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: 128
Comment:

I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my sisters machine. Everytime the machine is started up it does a scan disk. Once it is done going through that an message box appears saying:

Explorer has caused an error in Kernel32.dll
If you continue to experience problems try restarting your machine.

Another thing that I noticed was that the machine only shows that it has 127mb of ram even though it has a 128 stick in it. I thought it was a problem with the ram so I tried replacing the ram, but I think the ram I purchased was bad. Any suggestions before I spend more money?

No buddy...theres nothing wrong with the RAM.... it usually shows one ram less or more..thats not our point of concern (since in MB in computer terms is 1024 bytes...but mathematically its 1000 bytes ) neva mind that....
Coming back to the ERROR msg.... first of all find out if this ERROR msg started popin up after your sister installed/unistalled any software/game/patch/update ??? if yes then just undo that n the error woudl be gone...to do that...Go to Start ==> Programs ==> Accessories ==> System Tools ==> System Restore
n then from the callender simply choose a date on which the comp was workin fine.

If all of the above fails.. then...Go to Start ==> Run

n in the RUN type MSCONFIG

from the pop up window...click on a tab that says.."START UP"....now you'll have a list of all the programs/applications that automatically starts when your comp boots. All u gotta do is...UNCHECK all these options except these....
#1) Task Monitor
#2) System Tray
#3) Scan Reg
#4) Load Power Profile

and simply restart your computer.. TADA...issue resolved !!

I was recieving that very same error message , it would pop up shortly after I started up my PC ,I tried rebooting ,and it would happen again .I was told by a few replies here that I needed to reinstall WinMe, to replace the corupted explorer files ? Another way I was thinking of going was to reinstall the explorer.exe file from a .cab file on my H.D. B/4 I started trying any of this stuff ,I figured it could'nt hurt to try a system restore. I was pleasantly surprised it eleminated the error and have not seen it since !
Good Luck Nick

I tried to disable everything on start up, except for the 4 things mentioned above. I noticed after I click on ok to accept the changes it freezes. I have to hit control alt delete and end task on Wupdater. From thier it proceded to say that the machine needed restarted for the changes to take place.

This actually got rid of the error for the first two times the machine was restarted, then it came back. That is when I checked the start up items again and I noticed after the changes were accepted and the machine is restarted WinTools, Compaq Knowledgecenter, and HP Digital Imaging Monitor are still selected.

I also get another error on start up that sayes: c:\windows\desktop is not accessible. The system can not open the file. This error is hidden behind the Kernel32.dll error mentioned above.

If I click ok the computer freezes. So now I can not even get into the computer. To top it all off I dont have a windows me disk to reinstall the os.

Any more suggestions?

Novak

Sure... now all one small step... boot the comouter in SAFE MODE ( by pressin F8 key durin boot up and then by seletectin SAFE MODE)....
#1) Go to C:\Windows\Temp directory... Delete all the files/folders in it.

#2) now go to C:\windows\temp internet files..... and again delete every thing form here too...

#3)After this...Do the MSCONFIG step again... this time it wont freeze.

Ps if this doesn;t work .. let us noe there are few more steps we can do before movin to the DEADLY FORMAT ! :)
