I am having major problems. I am running windows me and looks like my drivers have all disapear. What are dll files???, i get the following errors dl_video.dll, rundll32, mmsystem.dll and i have no clue what they are (are they the drivers), if so where can I download new ones. Or how do i go about fixing this problem. Thanks so much hope someone will help. My icons are real big on my screen and the color is badddddd.

click start-run-type in msconfig-click ok-
click extract file-type in the filename-click start-in where to extract from-type in c:\windows\options\install
in where to extract to-type in
c:\windows\system
then click ok, repeat for other files.
although dl_video.dll isn't a win-me system file, so you may need to reinstall the software for your video card.
or skip the above and try a system restore
to before this started.
click start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore, choose a restore point before this started, when restore is done it'll auto restart your pc.

In the restore from i type this right "c:\windows\options\install' and in save file in i type this 'c:\windows\system" do i have it right i am getting an error message saying 'the file was not found verify that you have selected the correct restore from location and try again" i have also try switching them didnt work either.

if that one doesn't work could try c:\windows\options\cabs
or download them from http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html
click the dll search top center, then click the "Click here to begin your search." and download the ones for win-me, to c:\windows\system

If these moves don't solve the problems for you, please post your system specifications and exactly what circumstances led up to the error messages, plus the exact error messages and when they occur.

Well Trev, I am getting so frustrated nothing is working for me. I brough it over to a tech shop yesterday and they said to reload windows ME well wouldnt u know the cd that i have "that never been open" to restore is damaged. How about If i delete windows ME and install window 98, i was just over at staples and i cant affort 150.00 Is there a place on here i can download windows 98 with INSTRUCTIONS.

That is kool stuff, nicely oriented.
It is also good to document system's conflicts using Dr.Watson. A very useful utility since win 3.1
You may run it by selecting Run from the start menu an typing "drwatson" , hit enter and it will run in the background as a monitoring process.
You will see drwatson in your system's tray (where you get the time and date, lower right corner in the task bar) identified by an particular icon.
As soon as you start your a windows session, should a problem occur, it will log automatically to a text file the exact details that involved the system's failure.
You can later examine the results by doubleclicking on that icon. The program will make a snapshot of the processes and events that took place up to that moment.
From the file menu you can click on View and select Advanced from the submenu to have a complete set of items describing/displaying things of your interest.
I can't remember now the name of another diagnosing utility that comes integrated in windows. If anyone know it would be cool to know.
It works similar to drwatson... what it does is that it actually recollect data from your winMe and hardware and gets saved into a file ready to be sent via Internet to Microsoft's for review by expert staff .
They study the file and bring back to the customer possible solutions to a problem.
If this is accurate I would appreciate if anyone knows about this utility. I forgot how to bring it up on my winMe.
Very cool to examine problems related to the winMe platform is to also go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and open "System Information " item (part of the Microsoft Help and Support file).
It has several menu's, select Tools and from that list there is an option that records and keep track of system faults...it is named Fault Log... another text file.
Hope this share more insights.

Ok i did dr watson and got the following message "the file mmsystem.dll is not listed in the boot section of system.ini. Multinmeida service may be erratic. What now???

If this is what is causing the main trouble try editing SYSTEM.INI. Located in C:\WINDOWS folder you may open it with notepad to review the entries there.
According to info found in google :
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=reinstalling+mmsystem.dll&btnG=Google+Searchor
http://www.windows-help.net/windowsMe/tip-0100.html
try inserting the line for mmsystem.dll where it says "driver="
It should read driver=mmsystem.dll save and close. Restart your windows.
Apparently "mmsystem.dll" is an video and sound sequencer: (multimedia (mm) system file dynamic link library (DLL).
Follow these instructions taken from the link I provided you with:
"To replace missing or damaged Windows files, you can run Windows Setup from within Windows. When you are prompted to choose between running a complete Setup or copying all files again, choose to copy all the files again."
"In this case, reinstalling the Multimedia component using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel does not replace these files."
Hope it finally makes your system work.
