I don't know about anyone else, but when I download those little microsoft updates, the computer crashes and the update doesn't install.

The Kernal errors generally are generated by bad RAM or corrupted Kernal file. Especially when you see the infamous Kernal32.dll error this program will close. If it continues please restart. Try upgrading your RAM, or Removing it totally and getting new RAM or grab the kernal file off your installation disk and replace the existing one in your c:\windows directory.

I would strongly suspect hardware (RAM or HD). I had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the HD cable wasn't plugged into the hard drive all the way at one end. The PC has been stable ever since.
