Hi Folks

Please could one of you nice tech guys help?

I have an Asus A7A266 SKT A m/board which suddenly refuses to recognise the PS2 K/bd & mouse.

It will always recognise me hitting DEL to get to BIOS, but then nothing after that. I've tried other k/bds and mice but get the same problem.

If I boot into Win ME I just get no response at all. I've tried booting into various bootdisks, but again, nothing.

I appreciate that it may be as simple as a PS2 port failure, and I intend to try to get hold of a couple of USB adapters and see if that works, but I just wondered if anyone might suggest something different.

Many thanks for taking up your valuable time to read this.

Andy

When you power on the system, does the leds on the keyboard come on,then off, and does the Num Lock led come on and stay on. If you do not see these leds flash on then off, and they do not come on at all, then the fuse link for +5v to the keyboard and mouse on the system board could be blown.

Let the machine set powered off for at least 24 hours with the mouse and keyboard unplugged, before doing this test. Using just a known good keyboard, plug it in and while powering on the system, watch the leds on the keyboard. They should flash on and off once.

If the leds come on for a few seconds an go off and do not come back on, then it is possible that the fuse link is really a thermister and it has been damaged. This would explain the problem. The damaged thermister can supply current until the keyboard sends data. This overloads it and it opens up dropping the +5 volts. This could be measured with a volt meter.

Really sounds like the problem. Question. You said you could use DEL sometimes to get into BIOS. Can you use the keyboard to move around and change things in BIOS. (This would show the keyboard hardware is working!)

Thanks Jack & wawadave

That info is very useful, and I will try the test tomorrow morning, as the system will have been off for more than 24hrs by then.

In answer to your question Jack, pressing DEL works everytime to get in to BIOS, but after that, the keyboard does not respond at all. Infact, pressing DEL to get to BIOS is the only thing I can do at the moment.

Many thanks for taking the time to write your helpful comments down for me, and I shall let you know how I get on.

Kind regards

Andy
