I have had many a problem with IE--a lot of it my own doing. I would like to wipe IE of the machine and then re-install it. I have OEM disks that will not allow me to selectively retrieve IE.

p.s. my IE (ver 6.0)is presently so messed up that I cannot repair it, nothing!

Could I install Opera or Netscape, then get rid of IE, then download IE using Opera or Netscape and then do a re-install of IE....is this possible, feasible, workable, stupid? Let it fly!!!!

any way to save my IE favorites if I can do this so I may use them once I have new IE installed?

If this is wrong let me know....I can take it!

Eric

Eric,
I believe you would just need to copy or move what is in:
C:\WINDOWS\Favorites

As for the IE6. Have you tried to go back to 5.50?

Yup...I sure have tried. If I could recount what is so frigged up with this I would probably figure it out. Microsux was no help nor was my OEM which want me to clean install just for the silly IE. Suffice it to say that i have so many incomplete installs, etc that my only option is to go back all the way back to the stone age's "gopher"....y'know before the web was known as the web.

Thaks for the suggestion, Try

if you're talking about removing all versions if IE from windows it cant be done
unless you use 98lite and i'm not sure it would work with ME.

Thanks guru...
I guess that answers that! Why does ME give you the option to remove IE explorer in the repair offering? Or does it just revert back to an earlier version? (which of course on mine has incomplete install)

Eric - saving your favorites to a floppy - In IE goto File >> Import / Export and follow the wizard.

There are three things to try:

1. Roll Internet Explorer back to IE 5.5. Boot into safe mode to do this, just to make sure nothing is going to interfere with the rollback.

You can do this from add/remove programs in the control panel. When you click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and click the add/remove button, you will be offered some choices. Choose the uninstall to previous version choice. Reboot when prompted. Cross fingers.

3. Reinstall IE 6 if possible. This will have to be done in normal mode as you will have to be connected to the internet. This also may be kind of a pain in the *ss without Explorer working correctly, but there should be an ie6setup.exe file in your c:\windows update setup files folder or c:\windows\windows update setup files. One of the two.

Does search work for you? Or do you get the same error message when you open it? I'm guessing you will get the same message, but if not do a search for:

ie6setup.exe

It should find one in c:\windows update setup files. Connect to the net, then double click on the ie6setup.exe you found.

Follow the onscreen instructions to do a typical setup and reinstall IE 6.

If you cannot search... Connect to the net and try this:

Go to start>>run>>command.
Type each of these commands pressing enter after each one:

cd..
cd..
cd window~1
ie6setup.exe

It may or may not work. Not sure. It's a 32bit program, so starting it in a 16bit environment may not work.

2. An over the top installation to repair whatever is broken here. Before starting the over the top install, you will need to rename some files and remove some registry keys. The instructions for this can be found in this Microsoft Knowledgebase article:

How to Remove Internet Explorer 6.0 or Outlook Express 6.0 Before You Reinstall Windows (Q312474)

After following the instructions from the article above you can then start setup from c:\winodws\options\install if you installed ME or c:\windows\options\cabs if your OEM company (Dell, HP, etc...) installed ME.

You should not lose any settings. It should just repair ME.

I use opera as my backup browser and like it.

Hi erg57
Here is one out of left field and this actually happened to me, so I talk here from experience. There will be some who will disagree.

A while back I had major problems in WinME. At the time I was using IE6 that I had installed myself some months back.

I took the easy way out to solve my problems and installed WinME over it's self and it was ok with minimal consequences (sound effects for events hand up upon computer start up).

After the task was finished I found that in fact IE 5.5 had been reloaded without me doing anything. I still run it as I have no desire to reinstall EI6.

Next bit of info.

If you must reload EI6 then I think you will find a copy of that program on most any CD that comes with PCWorld. That is really the best way to load it as that program is rather large and takes a while to download from the net.

My 5 cents worth
Regards

Janset,

Thanks. I am taking everyones 5 cents worth and hope that my 2 cents back will be worth it as I delve into this abyss of IE repair. Funnier things have happened but my IE right now is so messed up, still works, but has trouble with many websites.

If I get a PCWorld disk for this will it be the same "soul-selling" that one goes through with those crap AOL disks i keep getting after berating them for not leaving me alone with their junk internet service.

Will I get on the mailing list from hades?

Hi Erg57
I have found PcWorld to be very user friendly and the program from all accounts performs very well. I subscribe to their form and I have heard only good reports adout the use of their discs to load any other programs.

As for AOL, been there and done that. Check this like out. I have posted it before but here goes again. In particular read the bit about AOL.
Parasites
