I'm always looking for more junk files to get rid of. About a week ago I found an index.dat file and a bunch of empty folders in
C:\WINDOWS\ApplicationData\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\UserData\

and I sent them to the recycle bin. There were no ill effects, and they were not recreated.

• What are these files/folders and what puts them there?
• Can anyone give me a reason why these files should NOT be deleted?

To Renaissance Man:

Cookies are used to store info that is used in a return visit to a server. They are limited in size and function. The UserData is a way of extending how much info a server can store on your computer. Some users delete cookies so this was designed and buried deeper in the OS. You might call it a 'bigger cookie'. It amazes me that web servers feel it's OK to use my hard drive space to store their stuff. A longer and drier explanation is at the microsoft site:

http://www.microsoft.com/mind/1299/inside/inside1299.asp

You might consider including these files in delindex.bat

a) I'm not a guru. Or an expert.

b) If I knew, I wouldn't ask.

c) Thanks, Chuck; that's what I had in mind.

d) Some people love autocomplete, and history trails all over the place. Some (like me) can't stand it. What does anyone think about deleting files in
c:\windows\Applic~1\Micros~1\Office\Recent?

Greenhorn user - but reading these posts and reviewing active x settings, I note:
In internet security, custom there is a setting to " Allow per session cookies". In my case it is enabled. Would this be related to the user data and perhaps it should be disabled to prevent these larger cookies to be stored in application data, user data.
Just some thoughts.

I have found this User.dat in:

C\Windows
C\Windows\Profiles\"your computers'name"

each are close to or quite larger than 1 mg in size

I did not find this in the path RM listed
C:\WINDOWS\ApplicationData\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\UserData\

Thanks for the info, erg57. I do not have a C\Windows\Profiles\"your computers'name" on my computer.

Long ago, there was a tweak that recommended the elimination of "user profiles" and I got rid of it. I don't remenber the details, but whatever I did, I kept one or more 1MB size file from appearing on my computer. I also think it was a security issue.

hello
user dat and system dat are your origenal
registry configuration back up files.
you should keep them as a dooms day back up you can use these from dos after all the other 5 default regrestore points dont work. draw back is all soft ware not oridgenal system configured install will be removed from the registry and wont run .
the good point is you can most likely restart system and get data off drive or repair system if your good
the mt folders in these dat files are not mt on all installs of m.e as some oem,s will have things in them as they are larger install than the full m.e cd installs with out extra junk the mt folder are safe to delete but note not all will be mt on all machines
have a nice day

User Data is a folder in c:\windows\ApplicationData\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\ and is not the same as user.dat which is a file kept in c:\windows\sysbckup.

The User.dat file under \Profiles is there because you are running Profiles on your PC. This is the User Profiles portion of the registry. It should NOT be removed.
