I have hundreds of zero byte .tmp files in my windows directory. Could someone tell me if it's safe to delete these, and if so, would the best way be from dos prompt- C:/Windows/del*.tmp Thanks.

Yes, in fact , if you go to find/search for files or folders on your start menu, you can search for *.tmp and delete all those temp files. Nasty little things !

You can delete any .tmp file no matter the size as long as you DON'T DELETE THE DIRECTORY IT WAS IN if that directory is part of the C:/windows tree.

Removing all .tmp files; does that include .tmp files found in the Windows/System folder and the Windows/Fonts folder?

GENERALLY speaking, .tmp files are left over from applications that didn't clean up after themselves when they installed.
1. windows/fonts should only have .fon or .ttf extensions in it. There should be no .tmp files in the folder. 2. windows/system is likewise, shouldn't have any .tmp files in it but the other extensions will vary.
If you're not sure, look in control panel/folder options/file types & if the extension isn't in that list, no application has registered that extension i.e. no application wants it.
If you're really not sure, either move the files to another folder or change the extension on the files. If windows gets an attitude, put/change the files back to the original folder/extension.
