I have an dell optiplex G1 computer from 1999, and want to update the sound card, and limited to space. The computer has 2 pci slots and two old ISA slots, the two pci slots are used up. Do companys like sound blaster still make sound cards for the older type slots? or could I purchase a card that has 4 pci ports instead of 2 pci and two of the older ISA that would fit a dell optiplex computer? let me know......Thanks

I'd just hit ebay and buy a creative sound card for 10 bucks or so.

One caveat, do a google search to see if your G1 will accept a full height card. If not, look for a "space saving" card.

I don't know too much about computers. My dell optiplex is a small desktop model, with one port for a cd-rom. I think the cards I'm talking about are pci riser cards, if so the riser card in this computer has two pci slots and two ISA slots. I wonder if they make something with 4 pci slots, that I could replace. Or is any sound card manufactured and on the market today that will fit into a ISA slot?

If it's a riser card, they're made with anywhere from 2 isa or 2 pci slots on up to about what you have. The case height or width limits the amounts of slots.

I'd just match up card dimensions to the width of the pci cards you're currently using. The Dell setup should recognize about any plug and play card you toss in the machine and the os will ask for drivers or install the proper drivers once the card is detected by Me. Me has a large driver database and most installs are little trouble.

My reference to a smaller card was mostly directed to a smaller desktop case that a normal size card might have trouble fitting into.

It's been my experience that an isa sound card, network card or modem is every bit as good as it's pci counterpart.

I admit to being lazy and not looking up any info on the G1. I'll do some research in the morning and should be able to give a better answer to your question. If possible, post back the service tag number of your G1...it'll make it easier to look up info and options available.

Thanks, That would nice of you. I looked at compusa.com and they sell nothing but pci soundcards, I was thinking of getting the soundblaster live card, but I don't think they make them for ISA ports. I've seen new modems for ISA ports, in fact I have a best data modem in my computer, that is a pci. I've seen them also for a ISA port, That means I would have to buy another modem, which, I just bought this one. Install it in the ISA slot and buy a sound card, and install it in the slot where the modem was. From what I understand, I don't know if I'm right. Everything That I've seen for a ISA port are only 16 bit, The sound cards for pci slot can be 24 bits of audio or higher. I have a dvd player and play divx avi files and the sound very crappy with high quality soundtrack. Also I have a recording program that does not reconize the audio mixers, such as mic, stereo mix, mono mix, line in, auxillary Etc. I just found this computer, and trying to get everything to work right, so I don't have to use, somebody else's computer that I've been using. This is a Dell Optiplex g1 Computer, and the mother board can take up to a 500mhz processor. Does anyone know about the dell optiplex series, I'm thinking about upgrading the mother board, but don't know if another mother board that can take a much higher mhz processor would fit into this computer. let me know....Adam

G1's came with several different processors. The service tag number (mine was W77LT) will give us access to more info about your system. Or, you can go here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx

and look for yourself. Here's an example of a pretty good isa sound card.

I went out today and bought the sound blaster live card, and that cured the dvd and divx avi sound. I forgot I have an old 486 IBM sitting around and has a US Robotics modem ISA slot modem in it, so everything works fine now. Thanks for the url, I'm posting in the forums of dell to get info about upgrades.......Thanks.....Adam

Adam,

Good to hear you got it sorted out and especially good to hear it's a solution you're happy with.

To finally answer your original question of "could I purchase a card that has 4 pci ports instead of 2 pci" the answer is yes. This card has 5 pci slots, shipping is free and it comes with a computer wrapped around it.
