The Windows update site tells me:

Windows Update has detected that you have the following hardware devices installed on or attached to your computer. Windows Update has an updated version of the device driver software that enables you to use this hardware with Microsoft Windows.

NVIDIA Corporation - Display
1894 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS - V. MU(082900)D Build 6.31

However, NVidia TNT 64 is the video card that is installed on my system.

I am confused. Did the Windows update just fail to recognize & identify my video card correctly? Or is the fact that they are posting it as an update for my system mean it is safe to use?

Thanks to anyone who can explain this.

With the Nvidia drivers its one size fits all. You may update it but I doubt you'll see any noticable improvement. In fact it may get slightly worse(albeit minor).I find mine works/performs best with the 5.11 or 5.13 drivers actually. Your milage may vary. You can check them all out at

jimi_1 that's an interesting comment (one size fits all). I have an Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 and I was advised to update by the local tech. I could'nt find an update to suit the Riva specifically so I downloaded the one i thought was the right one and installed it. I discovered then that my card had changed to Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 PRO. I was not sure that I had done the right thing here so I un-installed the driver and replaced the old one. Should I have left the new download on?

Mabey a better statement would be "one size fits MOST". The older drivers were more specific to the card as can be seen @ reactorcritical.com, but a look here>>

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows9x

shows that pretty much EVERY card they have is all lumped together tword one driver. I have swaped out many drivers for my TNT2/M64 but it has never changed ID on me. Try grabbing one from reactorcritical.com and printing out(and reading) the "readme" file attached to the driver. This will make sure you are installing it correctly.
