Working with an old computer here. I installed Windows ME and right off the bat, the CD-ROM drive doesnt work. Not listed in My Computer. Device manager calls attention to the IDE controller and the Primary and Secondary. The hard drives work, but the CD-ROM does not. Ive tried intels and ASUS's update utility for the motherboard and chipset, but when its ready to install, it says the operating system already supports this and no inf update is needed. The registry does not contain a NO IDE, i tried removing the devices and reinstalling, but without the CD-ROM access, theres no drivers to install. Motherboard is ASUS TXP4. Chipset is Intel 430TX. Perhaps you know a solution or can point me to the files I need from the Win ME CD which i have access to from another computer and can copy via floppy disk? Or is it hopeless and a reinstall is in order? HELP!

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=258757>Read and follow instructions on this website.Possible DMA problem.

That rig is just about an antique...lol
If you only have the 2 IDE devices, make sure the HDD is setup as primary master, & the CD-ROM is the 2ndary master. Double check that your jumpers are set correctly.
Hellz Yea!

The DMA method wont work because i dont have the drivers for CD-ROM or anything because when i tried to run the installation programs i downloaded from intel and Asus, they said the os had the most recent and no update was needed. Jumpers are set correctly.

You don't need special drivers for a CD-ROM drive, they're included in Windows.
You say the jumpers are correct...I'm gonna have to take your word for it. Do NOT use cable select. Make sure that both devices are jumpered as master & that they're both on their own IDE ribbon cable, connected to the end plug. Don't pair them up on the same cable. Go into the BIOS, STANDARD CMOS SETUP & make sure the primary master & 2ndary master are set to AUTO...set the primary slave & 2ndary slave to NONE or NOT INSTALLED. Then go to IDE AUTO DETECTION & run it. Make sure to save your changes.
Hellz Yea!

How old is the pc? is the cdrom drive a 40 pin connector. hdd number 1 ( host) set to master, cdrom on same ribbon cable set to slave. If using hdd host on channel one a and cdrom on channel two set both to master. Windows me has a cdrom setup file built into it. are you using windows me or 98 or xp? On cmos set all drives to auto detect.
Can you give me the motherboard identity, make model, you will find the code in between the pci slots. online all day, Chris reply to direct email chrisfell@btopenworld.com

jam - the jumpers are set correctly. The BIOS settings are all in order too. Chris - It is a 40 pin set to Master. No problems there, BIOS detects it and it is bootable from pre-os environment. Its an Asus TXP4, Intel 430TX as i stated above.

If bios is finding the cdrom drive, but it does not work, then the cdrom itself is either caput or the power supply terminal going to it is not powering it up. Is there a drive light on the cdrom during boot up?? also the ribbon cables are bi-directional,in other words data may be travelling in one direction but not back the other way. it does happen that ribbon cables can themselves be faulty. Have you tried setting up the cdrom from the windows boot disk it has files on it to do this.

Looking over your original message:
"I installed Windows ME and right off the bat, the CD-ROM drive doesnt work"
I assume you installed WinME using the CD-ROM? Was this a formatted HDD?
"Device manager calls attention to the IDE controller and the Primary and Secondary"
What does it say?
"tried intels and ASUS's update utility for the motherboard and chipset, but when its ready to install, it says the operating system already supports this and no inf update is needed"
Sure, the TX chipset is obsolete! There have been no updates for it in many years. WinME already has the lastest that are available.
I suggest you try booting into safe mode, going to device manager, & checking all the device entries looking for duplicates. If you find 2 or more of the same entry (IDE controller & CD-ROM for example), remove ALL of them. Then reboot & see if Windows can sort things out.
This has nothing to do with your problem, but since you'll be at the System Properties window anyway (& if you haven't already done so), click the Performance tab...then click File System & change the Typical Role to Network Server
Hellz Yea!

have you got a fix for this as I've got EXACTLY the same problem with an old ME system I've just build
