I am running Windows Me and I have a netgear cable/dsl gateway router. My computers are set up in a workgroup. I've installed blackice defender and it found an intruder. What else can I do? I am afraid to even check my bank accounts on-line and stuff. When blackice detects an intruder I'm assuming that they had gotten passed my netgear router firewall. What can I do?
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks
Jason

I get 40-50 attacks a day. Goto Tools on Black Ice Defender, Clisk on Edit Black Ice Settings, Tick "paranoid", enable auto-blocking, and if on cable add IP of your service provider to 'Detection tab'.
When you get an attack double click on it and then click on 'advice'button at bottom. They will explain what happened. I don;t think you should worry until icon flashes "red". Keep files updated.Good Luck

Maybe you can try zonealarm.
It's free, but documentation could be better. Maybe this firewall gives you more info or makes it possible to track down what is happening...Johan

ZoneAlarm is much better firewall than BlackICE.
Well...is the intruder always fro the same IP?
As information, many 'intruders' are only Internet Background Radiation (Steve Gibson's term).
For further information, read: http://grc.com/cb-faq.htm

Ah ya, wanna add. Besides, ZA, you can try NeoTrace. It trace down intruder's IP so u can report him or her or them to their ISP.
Get from: www.neoworx.com

what exactly does black ice say that the intruder is doing? if you have it set to paraniod the thing is gonna notify you all the damn time and 99.999% of it is getting pinged and standard internet traffic. don't over react until you know what is really going on.

neotrace is a fun little toy. The only problem i see with it is when you "trace down" the IP your probably only tracing down the poor sucker whos ip is being used to attack your machine. Want to secure your cable? unplug the cord when your done. Black Ice is not a firewall, it is however a great source of information. steve gibson is an idiot or maybe a god. time will tell. Zonealarm works as well as any other software based firewall , its free and light so why not use it. On the other hand if it did cost money i sure as hell wouldnt even know what it is. SSL secured socket layer protects you online at banks and shopping. If the guy attacking you can "hack" this. a firewall wont help you. Keep your important data completely away from the internet, problem solved. Then all the idiots can do is hack your jpg collection or use your bandwidth to dosh some poorly run website.

By all means read Steve Gibson's website but take it with a pinch of salt. He is a marketing man and is trying to earn a living. He is NOT a security expert. Although he gets some kudos from trying to raise awareness of internet security, many of the 'facts' on his web site has been shown to be techically incorrect. He has been accused by 'others' of spreading dangerous information. See http://www.grcsucks.com/ as well as his website to get an understanding of the bigger picture.

Do what I did. Buy a hardware firewall/router and then you dont have to worry about anyone getting to anything. The one I bought is the Linksys BEFSR41. Its a four port unit that fully supports DHCP setups so all you do is set the router up one time with your DSL/Cable modem info and then its plug and play from then on...sweet setup and totaly invisible to the outside world. Also it lets you open up 1 machine at a time to the full unprotected net if you need it for gaming or video chats or you can open single ports to host a web site or what ever else you might need to do.
Zonealarm is a good software setup but for my money nothing beats a hardware solution...

I have a netgear cable/dsl router/firewall and have dhcp enabled on the router so my ip range is the 198.162.0.2-33 but I installed blackice and black ice found someone hitting my system so I am assuming he/she got through the router/firewall. Does this sound like a good assumption???
Thanks everyone for your imput/advise.
Jason
