do you have another pc that you can go and DL the complete IE install and run it locally? I am assuming you do since you are posting... also do you have a restore point you can try? this is one of the many things that sucks about ME, the troubleshooting or lack there of. no event viewer, logs, etc

I think mike meant "download". The idea is to download IE6 as one complete (large) file onto some other machine. If this other machine has a CD writer then you can put it onto disk and run setup from that disk on the dodgy machine.

Does IE repair run through without error or does it moan about some file or other? If so this can usually be fixed.

Get hold of a server CD, there should be a copy of IE6 on there somewhere. It will mean "browsing the folders" but when you find the right folder it will contain a stack of .cab files. Holding the shift key down until the CD is read will prevent it from loading the whole CD.

What you are looking for is a file in amongst them called ie6setup.exe (you double click this file). You might be unlucky enough to get a few server features but these are not too difficult to remove afterwards.

i have found the ie6setup.exe in the prob.machine and i have tried to install it from there with no luck....i have noticed i have (2)windows update setup folders one within windows which has the ie6setup.exe - the other one is not within windows directory and contains ie5.5 setup(this secound folder does have alot more files in it than the one that contains the ie6 setup)

Re your #9. No I didn't mean those. With a server disk it has the files to overlay the complete IE.

Re-reading your original post here's another approach.
If you can still get onto the Internet then follow the procedure on here:

This will download the complete IE6 rather than trying to update what is already there.

The final step (not given in the link) is that you go to c:\downloads then double click ie6setup.exe to start the installation.

... a bit more. As I see it you need to direct the download to c:\downloads (using the Browse button), then select OS ... etc.

Real good news and thx for popping back to let us know.

Just so we know for the future, what was the cure in the end?
