People say that there is a hidden file where internet explorer records all pages visited. This file can't be deleted via 'clear history' and 'delete temporary internet files'.
Is this the hard truth or a just a fairy tale?

The "hard truth" is that any file you delete is still retained on your hard drive, and anyone could access your drive and get that information if they knew how.
Use CRTl + O (letter O not zero). You can type in your urls here and it by passes Internet Explorer. It shows up in the History which you are able to delete in Control Panel, Internet Options.
Go to www.softseek.com (shareware-freeware site, par excelence!), Scroll down to Utilities, click on security. When page opens click on Encryption, decryption & file wiping and you can find any number of programs both freeware and shareware which will wipe you hard drive clean of any deleted files. I use Clean Disk Security, it's a good cleaner.!

The file is index.dat located in your \windows\cookies directory and it can be cleaned with programs like window washer from WebRoot software.
