On a notebook with Win Me german updated in english, we can get connected to our internet server but we can't access any site
Tried different server and different modem, same problem....

did you download the service pack for IE?.. .try if you can connect to internet using netscape....
Regards Miro

when this happens you can't access the net
with any browser miro. i dunno why it happens
or what the solution is, but it happened to me yesterday. correction, you can access the
net but you can't even get the homepage to come up let alone do anything else. i just re-formatted and loaded my image file and all
is back to normal now. i'd be interested in a solution as well.

if that is the case then i would try to do following in this order
-remove modem and let windows find it agin
-if the above did not work i would reload the windows
-if that did not work i would try to reload the windows in different subdirectory
-if that did not work i would reformat and reload windows
Regards Miro

alot of the time this is at the isp
level, so a call to your isp tech support
is the best thing to do.
unless this is a new install of dial up
networking, then adding client for microsoft networks in control panel -network.can help.
to see if dns servers are available
start-run-type winipcfg click ok, then click
the more info and see if any dns server ip numbers are there.
best solution is call your isp.

I do tech support for an ISP. There seem to be a variety of things that can cause this problem. Three fixes that often work are:
(1) Go into Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced, click on the "Restore Defaults" button, save, exit Internet Explorer, and reboot.
(2) Go into Control Panel | Network, open TCP/IP properties for the dial-up adapter, and disable Wins Resolution. Note: this particular fix works with the network settings of OUR ISP . . . it may not be appropriate with yours, so if it doesn't fix the problem, put the Wins setting back where it was before.
(3) With Internet Explorer 5.5, you can also try going into Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, select "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools," click the Add/Remove button, and select "Repair Internet Explorer."If none of those work, it could be a line noise issue, a driver issue, or a whole bunch of other things. I'd need more info to diagnose (e.g., does email work? do other browsers work? what modem/driver do you have?)
