I am currently having this problem:

When I click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and I get two error messages:

1. Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page. Do you want to continue running the scripts. Yes/No

The question cannpot be answered because a second and smaller dialog box comes up:

2. Microsoft Internet Explorer
An error has occurred in this dialog
Error 30
Unspecified error. OK

I can't access to my control panel, nor can i type anything in the dialouge boxes in IE. I found a post on this problem and tried the solutions given. (ref: http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/39946.html)
I tried removing my IE 6 using IEradicator. Although the IE prog was removed, but there was still the Internet Explorer folder in my Program Files. There was a folder called 1033 and some other files and folders. I tried deleting but failed as there was a pop-up message that says "Windows is using the file". So i ignored the existing folder, and re-installed IE5 instead. However, the error 29 problem still existed.
I'm also having the problem of the CoolWebSearch spyware. Does it have any connection?
I was adviced to restore my system. Is it the best and only solution?? Please do give my some advice. Thank you.

Samantha, IMHO, your solution may be a little convoluted. First, your problem might be caused by CW. There is a version of CW that can't be removed by the original Shredder. There is another, updated version of Shredder (V 2.0) which is able to handle it. Be sure you have the proper version.
Another possibily is restore. Be aware that ME and XP both have a feature called 'Restore'. A nasty (virus, spyware, etc) can hide there and since it is a 'Windows' file, Windows won't allow any alteration so long as it is active. The registry gets re-written on the next bootup and the last successful boot is used and since nasties don't count, the boot appears to be sucessful, thus a 'nasty' gets replicated.
The solution is simple (assuming that's the problem), TEMPORARILY disable Restore (in order to 'unprotect'), scan/clean, re-enable restore and try again. May have to reboot.
During the disable process, you will destroy ALL your restore points, thus some folks disagree with that fix, feeling that any restore point (even a corrupted one!) is better than none at all. You can sidestep that pitfall by creating a new restore point as soon as you have a clean machine. FWIW, I have used it on both ME & XP Pro with no lasting ill effects.
HTH.
