A friend has a DSL internet connection and just after logging on it freezes..Cant do anything..She has had the DSL for several months and it worked fine..But, the past week it has been doing terrible..When not on the internet the other programs work fine..Plays music fine.So I ruled out hardware. It immediately freezes after she loggs on to the internet..Evidently she can get a connection..I think..Because of that I ruled out the Network card. She has Norton Internet Security if that rings a bell. System Restore doesn't do any good..Scandisk does no good..She probably has some spyware and some adware.. I need to download Ad Aware but I cant on her computer..Also if I use my computer to do that I still cant get the latest updates cause her computer cant use the internet...Anyone had this problem??? Thanks

Adware updates are not a problem?
Download the AD-Aware install program and put it on a CD and install it on her machine while offline.
On your (or any working system) update AD-Aware v6 to the latest reference update. Then go to the Program Files\LavaSoft\Ad-aware 6\ folder and grab a copy of the "reflist.ref" file. It is about 1.25MB and still fits onto a diskette. Just replace the existing copy on her machine and it is "updated" to the current level.
Or you could manually download the current reflist.ref file directly from Lavasoft's servers and do the same
When you run it the first time, be sure to select the Customize options and enable all that you can and then run a full Customize scan (their smart scan is not so smart:)
You can also download SpyBot S&D 1.3 install program, and then their spybotsd_includes.exe and then install and update it offline.
I keep a CD with these on it and update the AD-Aware reflist.ref and the spybotsd_includes.exe files weekly, along with the latest copy of Stinger.exe from McAfee and the full virus definition files for a Virus scan that I can run from DOS. Even made the CD bootable so I can use it to copy the files onto the system in case it can only be booted into Safe Mode where it can not read the CD!

JackG...Thanks for the info..I'll do that..I dont know if Spyware has anything to do with the freezes but running Ad Aware will help some..I hope...Tnanks again..

I would think that spyware is the problem. Whether is spyware, adware, trojans, hijackers, or what ever. A lot of them screw with Internet Explorer. I have had a few problems with Internet Explorer in the past, and of course 99 percent of them were spyware related. You guys should really be steered clear from IE. For many reasons. I suggest using Mozilla Firefox. That is what I use, and I love it. It looks pretty much the same as IE, but its way better. It even blocks pop-ups, and loads pages faster. And I dont think much of any spyware is involved with it. Where as IE is the opposite, IE has many security issues. I would use Firefox.... its only like 4.7 MB.

Oh, also what I would do, would be to empty out all temporary internet files and cookies. I do that daily :)

Thanks for the replys guys..I found out that there was a whole lot of programs loading in MSCONFIG (Startup)..I mean a ton..I unchecked just about all of them..I ran Ad Aware and RegCleaner and got rid of a lot of junk..Spyware and all of whatever else was found..Now it runs much better and does not lock up..Thought I would let you know...Thanks again..
