My problem occured a few days ago when I recieved a new
Maxtor Ultra Series 80 GB hard drive with an 8 MB cache,
7200 RPM, and Ultra ATA/133. The hard drive also came with
a MaxBLAST 3 cd that is used to partition and format the
hard drive for an easy installation of any Operatin
System. After my new hard drive was partitioned and
formatted, I put in my Windows 98 start up disk and I
typed setup.exe and it scans my system and then I press x
to exit that and then all of a sudden DOS prompt appears
again, and I type setup.exe again and it run's through
installation. After my PC restarts, the Window's 98 screen
appears saying it is starting for the first time, and then
it brings up a screen that says Invalid VxD dynamic link
call to device number 3, service B. Your Windows
configuration is invalid. Run the Windows Setup program
again to correct this problem. Then my PC shuts down. Now
I've also tried FDISK and the same problem occurs. Also,
before the screen appears, you have the option to start in
Normal, Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT), Safe mode, Step-by-step
confirmation, Command prompt only, and Safe mode command
prompt only. Now I read on a different section of this
board that the way to solve the problem was by entering
through save mode and editing a .ini file, but since Safe
mode brings up the same thing normal mode does I'm kind of
clueless. I've also checked my BIOS settings and my hard
drive is recognized. I'm hoping someone can assist me in
fixing my PC. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank
You

Brandon

Brandon, have you tried setting cdrom as first boot device in the bios and rebooting with your Windows cd inserted? You shouldn't really have to type anything. It should be automatic.

Yeah, my cd rom drive is first on the list for booting up. Then its removable devices, hard drive, and then network boot.

I also tried that, and I get Stardard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.

Please remove any floppy disks from your drives and press any key to restart your system.

I kept getting a lot of "file not found" errors when I was installing 98, and had to keep directing setup back to the cd. If I had to do it again, I would copy the files from the cd to the hard drive first. Don't ask me how, I always have to look up the dos commands, lol. I think 98 setup will try to install the files directly from the cd if you don't do this, and cause a lot of errors.
I hope this helps, I'm out of ideas.

I did what you said, and I got the Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender. Same error again. :(

Once I got an error message when I tried to install XP or ME on a reformatted hard drive, something like "there are errors on the disk". I pulled the power cord out of the computer, and after about five minutes plugged it back in. ME then installed with no error messages. Admittedly it's a long shot and I have no idea why it worked. But give it a try.

Hi Brandon,
Ok i think i can see whats going on here,It has to do with your computer being a "bundel" computer (ie: a shop bought PC with OS allready instelled).
Now i may be wrong but........What is happening is I think your 98 Disk is a recovery CD not a full istall CD.So what is happening is when you try to load the OS it is looking in the MBR (Master Boot Record)for files to say that you are recovering your OS to your orriginal PC that the disk came with.....so when you replace your hard drive..it is basically trying to say to you that this is not the orriginall PC that the disc was ment for ...so it wont let you load it.......
Now if this is the case, You have 2 options.

1.This is what i would try first.
Put your orriginal Hard drive back into your computer and reinstall your original system from the cd you have been trying to use.Now as a default that hard drive is set as Master (of course).put in your new hard drive as well but set it as SLAVE ,now use the softwear that came with the new hard drive (MaxBLAST 3)it will transfer everythink from your old hard drive to your new hard drive (including your orriginall MBR).YOU HAVE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH MaxBLAST 3.

2.Put in your new hard drive as Master and go get a new virsion of Win 98SE and do a fresh install.

I hope all that makes sence and solves your problem..
Good luck.
Oz

ok bradon i came across ur problem here, cause im haveing the same problem with my moms comp. Its a dell "bundled comp" but i have my own disk (disk type dont matter) ive tryed 98se, and ME same error. i tryed win 2000 got an error. and linux dont even want to start installing. so i took the HD out and put it in a diffrent comp The HD works fine. So now i think its the motherboard or something on it like ram. I was up all night trying everything i know (10 yrs in messing with these damn things) im going to look up stuff on the motherboard that i have and see if thats the problem.

Gentlemen,

Here is how you fix this problem.

* Access your system Bios Feature Setup
* DISABLED Chip Away Virus On Guard.
* DISABLED External Cache.
* Promp your start up with CD-ROM first.
* F10 Save and Exit.

Place your Win98' OS CD in your CD-ROM and restart your computer to install your OS.

Good Luck!
