vista, however dos does not read the dvd. Can anyone tell me how to install it. Windows Vista 32bit home premium. thanks Amelia

You haven't really provided enough information. Does your machine have a DVD Drive? Does it meet the minimum requirements for Vista (found here)?:

Life's more painless for the brainless.

I don't know what a "pentium 111" is, but I have no doubt that Vista was a poor choice for your system. Obviously you'll need a DVD drive to install it...the disc can't be read by a CD drive. Regardless of that, I'd be willing to bet the rest of your system hardware isn't capable of running it.

LOL...does "pentium 111" = Pentium 3?
Make sure your BIOS is set to boot off the DVD drive.

How about posting your system specs?
CPU type & speed?
RAM type & amount?
Video card?
HDD capacity?Or better yet, give us the model number of your Dell so we can look it up at the Dell site?

"uh yeah"
It written as either Pentium III or Pentium 3, or simply P3.
At 1st glance, I thought you had a Pentium 1.

And it also helps to know that it's a notebook, not a desktop system....

How much RAM do you have?

Vista is a bad idea...but there's always Win2K or WinXP

My computor is four years old and i believe that vista could be a major problem due to the limited space. xp or windows 2000 would be senseable...or a new pc..i ran the advisor before i bought the dvd, which told me icould run vista but if icant install it..i cant use it huh? lol thanks amelia

RAM is almost always the most critical spec - - interestingly, that's one spec (among many) for this 'computor' that the OP can't seem to provide
Some people would consider a PIII too outmoded for XP to run on - while that's not necessarily true, it beggars the imagination that 'Vista' would be considered a reasonable candidate
Shoulda saved your money - - the idea is to ask questions first, not after the fact
Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real.

I did ask the questions before i ordered this os your not exactly talking with a complete computor illiterate here. i just thought someone here may be smarter or i had missed something which you would see.
thank you all once again
amelia

amelia, if you have less than 512 MB of RAM installed (and I suspect you might have less). Then you have a genuine bone of contention with Microsoft if you used their Vista advisor.
Push hard enough and I'm sure they would recommend you get a refund at the place you purchased the Vista dvd.
Bluntly speaking, to run Vista on that machine is taking the piss.
As for the dvd not running do you have an original operating system CD (ME or otherwise) that you can test to see if it's a hardware issue or not?
