Installing updates

After installing windows update KB896727, when I restarted my computer I received the message that Window could not upgrade %1 from %2%1:2%. It also says that Windows could not upgrade l or more system files before starting, windows may not start or run properly. If windows fail to start, run set up again. This same message has appeared again when I went to install the latest updates from AVG. My computer seems to run ok. I searched previous answers and found one which mentioned renaming the wininit.ini file, but that files does not exist on my computer. I have several similar ones, but not that particular file. Can anyone help me fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

I have searched the sites in google and most of them that apply to Windows ME suggest renaming the wininit.ini file, which is not on my computer. Another site took me to a microsoft page which tells me to make a start up floppy disk, with instructions on what to do after. Well making the floppy disk was easy, but what to do after inserting it...well I'm just lost. Whats on the screen and what I should do next...I guess I'm not computer literate enough to figure out. Did anyone else have this problem and was able to solve it, or any other help or suggestions with it is appreciated. Thanks.
