I bought a soundcard - Soundblaster live 5.1. I thought it would be easy to install, but obviously not. First I made a mistake by not disable the on-chíp souond in BIOS. It's a CMI8738/C3DX Pci Audio Device. So when I had put the new card in a slot the machine didn't found it and it showed up as a yellow exclamation mark (unknown device). There's a CD included for installation. I also get a message about digital signature. It says that Microsoft maybe have not tested the driver that you choosed to install would work as it should with Windows ME. To keep the reliability of the the system following drivers will not be installed: Bringing back sound for Microsoft Kernel system. Does this mean it's impossible to install the card? The problem is also that I lost the sound from the soundcard that was there from the beginning. I have disabled in bios, removed the new card but nothing has helped. If someone would know more about this I would be very thankful.

Nah. But you might try downloading a fresh driver here

Some of the sound balster cards generate device conflicts but you won't know until you try it. If that's the case you have to force it onto an unused IRQ.

Thank you guys, but I gave up. It didn't help by disable it in bios. The PC couldn't really detect the card and it showed up as an unknown device in device manager with a yellow exclamation mark. No matter what I did, the drivers couldn't be installed. I guess some cards just don't match.
Now I have the problem to get rid of the yellow exclamatin mark. It's still there even if have removed the card. But this is another issue.

did you run the setup program on the CD *before* you installed the sound card? I've had various hardware where you had to run the CD first, then install the device. A few times, I also had to reinstall the drivers again afterwards.

you can remove the device in the device manager by clicking on it and then clicking the remove button on the bottom.

First things are first, and perhaps i can help:
1. Uninstall the software related first from add/remove programs.
2. Remove the yellow marks in the device manager selecting each item by a click on them and pressing del.
3. Shutdown the computer, UNPLUGGIT FROM THE ELECTRUC POWER (is that correct?, i´m not quite shure... whatever...)
4. Open the case and remove phisically the sound card (don´t close it yet).
5. Turn on the computer and before windows starts, make shure your on board sound is disabled
6. Save changes and restart the PC, this will give a fresh start without any sound device present so windows re-arrange the IRQs automatically again eliminating any conflict. You must note at this point that there are some newer bios that allow to the user to define if there is a plug and play OS installed and if the resources will be handled by the OS or the BIOS in self, i suggest leave it all to the OS.
7. After windows has completed the start, make shure there is no conflict in the device manager. If it so, shutdown the computer, again UNPLUGGIT FROM THE ELECTRIC POWER and install the sound card, start windows, cancel the add/remove hardware wizard if starts, install again the drivers following the manufacturer instructions (best chance you have if uses that which came with the device, because you can allways update them later).
8. At this point i hope everything is OK, if not, chances are that you face again resources conflicts, if it so, you can try: THE EASY WAY: delete the yellow marks again in the device manager and move the card to another free PCI slot, here the theory says that the OS will re-assign the resources again because the drivers are already intalled (one thing, we expect that works, but with windows nothing is granted...)
THE HARD WAY: If that doesn't work you can try manually re-assign the resources from the device manager, it's some large to explain it in detail, but the steps are
a) see whis IRQ number is in conflict
b) note which other device is in conflict
c) locate the free IRQ's
d) move the conflict device to a free IRQ, leaving the audio card where it is.

You can try the possible solutions at your will.

In return the advice, drop me a line if it works or if it not and telling me how many conectors has the card on the back and which ones are, because i'm considering to buy one like that.

See ya ON THE NET!
