I'm trying to install Windows Me on a fresh/formated hard drive, nothing but problems. System is:
Celeron 466mhz
6.5G HDD
64mb PC100 sdram
The old O/S was Windows 98SE. I ran f-disk than Format C:, set cd rom as first boot in cmos. Everthing seems to be fine until it reached "initializing set up" it than hung.
pressed "Ctrl-Alt-Del" than just hangs with an empty blue screen. Am I doing something wrong? need help please.
thanks Snap

hello snap
try setting it to boot fllopy, hard drive cd-rom
hard drive might not be powering up and cd-rom has no place to d/l too.
cant hert but i just seams cd first does not sound right and i cant rember why.
you can always set it back.
dino if you like 98 so well goto 98 forum theyll like you there
have a nice day

I'll try that, the first two options are there but the third just says try other boot devices yes/no. I just finished re-installing over and this time during initializing set-up I recieved probably 15-20 errors. I'm running scan disk right now but I doubt this will do anything. The allocation files not being identical seems to be the problem, any ideas how to remedy this first?
still searching thanks Snap

I apologize guys I wasn't trying to offend anyone or downplay your problem.
I agree that cd 1st doesn't sound right either. Since your trying to install from a cd onto freshly formatted hd, you may need a start up floppy that tells the comp to get it's info from the cd or maybe it needs to load a certain exec file.
Peace?

Thanks Dino peace
This is the first time I've had this problem installing, could you please tell me where I would locate these options/files on the floppy, I only have a Me start-up disk,98SE cd,95 cd, and Me cd.
Snap

Cool, thanks bro. Since you have an ME Start up floppy, there's not much else I can tell you. I went to the MS web page under troubleshooting ME setup an found this. Don't know if it will help:
After the EBD has been created, Windows Me Setup is ready to begin copying files. If you are installing from a CD-ROM, from 0 to 10 percent of the file copy process, cabinet (.cab) files are copied to the Windows\Options\Install folder. If you encounter file copy issues, verify that your CD-ROM is clean and that it is not scratched, and then place the CD-ROM in the drive to try again. If that does not resolve this issue, perform the following steps:
Insert the Windows Millennium Startup disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.
Start your computer with CD-ROM support.
At the command prompt, type:
c:Then press ENTER and type:
md flatThen press ENTER.
NOTE : If you do not have enough free space on drive C to create a flat folder, create the flat folder on any drive with enough free space.
Change to the CD-ROM drive. For example, if the drive letter is "G", type:
g:Then press ENTER.
Type:cd win9x
Then press ENTER.
Type:
copy *.* drive :\flatThen press ENTER, where drive is the drive that contains the flat folder you made in step 4.
After the files have been copied to the flat folder, change to the drive where you copied the flat folder. For example, to change to drive C, type:
c:Then press ENTER.
Type:cd flat
Then press ENTER.
Type:setup
Then press ENTER. Windows Me Setup should now restart.

Snap,
I sent you an email (
to arsenault9290@rogers.com) with an attachment regarding your question.Regards,
Kaz

Thank you all,
Kaz I'm going to run your disk tonight right now it has wore me down. I'll post back late this evening or tomorrow to let you know how it went. One other question my mobo came with a disk for the intergrated hardware I loaded all the drivers for hardware through its set-up and seemed to work ok. I than noticed that it reads as follows for Win 98 only. The machine came with 98se installed on it not 98 could this be the problem? sorry about all the questions.

Is this the same computer you asked about here??:
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/21754.html
If it is... then I am still going with BAD RAM... Really, really bad RAM.

Yes it is the same one newgrl, I contacted my tech support gave them the errors and suggested I had bad ram. The technician said I needed to format than re-install do not run set up only. I even offered to bring the pc in to get checked. I have used the floppy download provided by Kaz and so far only one error,"sucatreg" I am in the process of running a thorough scan disk and defrag. I don't mind purchasing more memory but the company where I purchased the pc has a seal on the back putting a void on my warranty if I open the case, which I don't think they can do anyway. Newgrl since they don't seem to want to check it should I just put in a new stick and test it (one from my existing pc) or persist for them to take it in for evaluation?
thanks Snap

Son of snap, I think dino got his info from this place. Might be more for you to look at. Also, that way you could have it in your "Favorites" if you need to look at it at a later date.
How to Troubleshoot Installation Issues During Setup in Windows ME (Q268891)
I'll Try

I don't know Son of Snap... Depends on what "voiding your warrenty" exactly means to you.
If you are ok with doing this, then yes... by all means... try a different stick of RAM.
If it means something to you... bug them until they are sick of you. And then bug them some more. It needs to be checked.

Thanks for all of your help and input everyone, but it's time for me to go and drive someone else (the computer company) crazy for awhile.
Thanks again Snap.
