i installed a western digital 40gb hard drive on to my computer.
i used the boot disc it came with to make it ready to use with windows me.
when i put my ME boot diskett into the floppy
drive and reboot it says cannot find boot record.

the bootable western digital cd rom disc
asked me what operating system i was going to install cause its gotta decide on fat 32
and stuff like that...i guess.i chose windows me.
it did its thing than asked be to insert my OS boot disk and hit any key to reboot.
BLAMO....here we are now.
I am hoping i have a bad floppy boot disc that came with windows ME.
Its been all over the house.
Lucky to still have it id saythank you for responding

You do very likely have a bad ME boot floppy. You can download a program that will make a boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com . Do not just copy the downloaded program to floppy, it must be exectuted.

like when you click on the exe file and it askes you to insert a floppy disk???
i wont be able to try this until tomorrow.
i have to use my work pc floppy drive.my current pc is a dell with xp OS and it has everything but a floppy drive.
i am trying to bring my not too old computer back to life for the kids
thank you for responding

Forget about bootfloppy. The ME instal CD is bootable. Just put that in and reboot.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach him to fish and his wife will never forgive you.

The CD will boot as long as it's set as a boot device in the BIOS. So, go into the BIOS and check to make sure it's the first boot device. Then, after installing, remove the CD from boot options in the BIOS.

i have tried many times to boot from cd.
i have been in bios and set the cd rom as boot device.i have always had to use startup floppy...
even when reformatting the hard drive on my old computers.like, why would it come with a starup floppy
if you didnt need one.i heard its cause dos is different in ME than windows 98 and all that. xp has funny dos too.
need 4 floppy's to reformat hard drive on windows
xp i heard.....but thats another topic.i am at work now and i am making a startup disk.
i hope it works.
thanks again for all your support.

ok this is the last straw.....
let me explain the whole story.
my dad had this frank n stein computers with two hard drives on it.
one hard drive was windows me which i had purchased for him and the other hard drive
was for stuff.well one day somehow windows xp pro wound up on these hard drives and it screwed everything up cause alot of my hardware was now incomatible...includeing the floppy drive.
so now seeing the error of my ways i am
trying to reinstall windows ME on a
brand new hard drive and that brins us to where i am today.P.S. when the boot screen comes up with all that computer info...its says my floppy drive is B: even though i Have it check as
A: in Bios and B: as Not installed.you can oly plug in the strip one way but there are two plugs for the floppy drive.
one in the middle and one at the end.i use the one at the end.
im might go out and get a new floppy drive.
i just dont get it.

The position on the cable determines if a diskette drive is the A: or the B: drive. (Unless its one of those Compaq diskette/120 drive combos that go on an IDE cable.)
