I am moving from dial up to High speed DSL. The DSL required I.E. 6.0 on my computer. When I try to install I.E. 6.0 (used setup.exe from microsoft website), I keep getting the 'Set up Failed' soon after the installation starts. I have IE 5.5 and that seems to work fine.
I am not sure if this is a incompatibility issue between IE6 and windows me on my machine?? or becasue i have IE5.5??
please help.

Suresh,

Could you walk us through, exactly, what you did, and what happened when, thanks.

You could download the complete IE6, and install it from your computer. Instead of running it's install, from the net. Just a thought, if you weren't doing it this way.

Do you have, and use a firewall?

Will ask, are you connected, when you run/start the setup, from MS? Had to ask.

Wombat,

That's good and all, but, why not just download it from MS. Myself, I can think of some reason why, it would be better to download from MS. If it doesn't get downloaded completely, the first time. You can pick up where it left off. ect. ect. With dial-up, that could be important. Just an opinion.

CrazyOne, the reason I use and recommend downloading the full version from http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/internet-explorer/6.0sp1/ is that you get the whole full install. (I use GetRight)

Where as if you go to Microsoft and download you first get a little installer of 480 kbs. and if you get problems installing the rest of IE 6.0 such as 'Set up Failed'. Doing it my way it will reduce the chance of this.

Downloading a 76 meg programme was not a problem to me when I was on 56k dialup. I regularly downloaded files over 100 megs

Yes, that's true. Then you use it, to download {not install} the rest. You could download just the things you're going to install. Or, you can download the whole package.

You can even select, for which OS, you are downloading the install for.
hint-hint ;-)

As I said, that was just my opinion

Thanks,

The part of the problem reported that bothers me is the part about

"The DSL required I.E. 6.0 on my computer."

DSL is the hardware modem. It cares less about what browser is being used or even what hardware it is attached to. Works just as well with a MAC or a Unix system, which I am sure do not require I.E. 6.0.

I think Suresh is a bit confused by what the ISP and "its software" package "claim" they need to install and run their software application that supports their DSL modem.

I for one have never installed any software provided by any ISP. Most of it is more trouble than it is worth. Windows already has everything you need for dial-up accounts, and most broadband connections except for those requiring connection signon.

Most DSL providers want you to install their grand and glorious bug infested front end shell over IE 6 and claim ownership of your system. To do this they often require a PPPoE connection login and password, and make you think you have to use their front end program to do this. There are several small programs that can handle this for you. Or better and safer yet, a router placed between your DSL modem and the system can do the password logon and you can skip all the other junk they send you, because everything should then be plug and play on the Internet.

Hum.. I like that download link. Its a good alternate source for when the Windows Update site quits working for Windows 9x/ME users next year.

I'll second JackG's advice. You should be able to use any browser. The only reason to use an ISP's install software is may be to access their setup. I also recommend getting a router whether or not you have more than one computer.
