Installing a new hard disc.

Hi,
I'm a bit of a technophobe, and am well out of my depth in trying to fit a second hard disc! I have plugged it in, and set the pins and tinkered with the BIOS settings, so that, as my machine boots up, it noe recognises the second hard disc (as a 'slave' toi the first). However, Windoes ME doesn't recognise the new drive. i presume that's because it's not been formatted. Usually, that could be done from DOS, but I understand it's hard to get to DOS from this OS. Is there any way to format the new drive from within ME, please?

In the Program/Accessories start ms-dos prompt and run fdisk command from the dos prompt.Partition the hard drive with fdisk and reboot the computer. If the detection ran properly you had to choose the hard disk to be partitioned.Next following reboot, open the same dos windows and use format on the partitions you have created(one or more drive letters were created by the partitioning). This can be done if you have a working copy of Windows on the first drive or primary C drive set active. You can also use a dos boot diskette of Windows ME. From dos prompt: fdisk (press enter) format X: (press enter)(X is your drive letter) Good luck.

There is no format on an ME boot disk. You'll need a 95 or 98 disk. Get one from Bootdisk.com. At the a:> prompt, type format x: ( where "x" is the drive letter)
