I am having problems installing win 98se. I formated my XPpro because of many viruses and now would like to install win 98se (original cd). The problem is that I can't change a: for my cdrom prompt (have tried a to z) to install my cd. I downloaded a bootdisk (win 98se with cdrom driver) from bootdisk.com but will not startup it tells me remove disquette and press any key to continue. The only bootdisk that startup is the one I made before I formated. Any suggestions? Pls help Thx Sylvie
First try booting from the cd. Go into cmos/bios setup and set the first boot device as the cdrom. Then reboot with the 98 cd in the cdrom. If your disk is bootable then you can get it installed without using a floppy bootdisk.
The bootdisk files you download aren't the bootdisks themselves--they're files you run to create a bootdisk. Make sure you've run the file you download. After it's created the bootdisk try again to boot up your computer with it.
Sorry I must be doing something wrong it still doesn't work. If I put just the cd in it tells me missing operating system insert boot disquette in drive a: and press space bar when ready. I put the bootdisk I made and from there gives me just the a: all other gives me invalid drive specification nothing on it I can run (fdisk - incorrect ms-dos version)
Sounds like a crappy bootdisk. You may want to download a different bootdisk file--you can look at www.bootdisk.com for that. Or I can send you a bootdisk file if you post back your email address.
OK, it should be there. Be sure to unzip it with winzip and then run the extracted file. Don't just copy it to a floppy disk.
Also it might be a good idea to click on the 'edit' link in your post above and remove your email address. Somtimes posting it in a public forum can increase your spam.
If it's already set as the first boot device then put the bootdisk in the computer in which it was created and post back the names of some of the files on the disk so I can see it got extracted OK.
I put floppy first in bios. Startup with bootdisk I made. then changed to the other you sent me. a:dir 98_MIN EXE 1 file(s) 1,045,863 bytes 0 dir(s) 411,648 bytes free tried a:fdisk bad command or file name tried a:98_min exe this program cannot be run in DOS mode.
Maybe you should send me the other bootdisk which loads the ASPI files?
You unzipped the file I sent to a floppy disk. That's not enough. You have to run (click on, execute, etc.) 98_min.exe on another computer in order to create the bootdisk. 98_min.exe is not the bootdisk, it's a file you have to run in order to create the bootdisk.
