Windows update shows an update for DirectX. I am considering installing it but I am uneasy that it cannot be uninstalled. I have a set point on system restore. If I update my directX and start having problems can I simply go back to my restore point and in effect uninstall it? Also the only problem I have with games is that some of the faster games on pogo are jerky and I am wondering if the update will help to fix it. I realize that it might simple be a ram problem but I thought that updating DirectX might help. Thanks for any input.
Thanks
Teabag

What version of directX is installed on your system? You should be able to find out by going to start > click run > type dxdiag and press enter, directX and graphics driver version should be listed on the first tab of the directX diagnostic utility. You can also click on the other tabs and see if any problems are found, there are also tests on some of the tabs that you can perform to see if everything is working okay.
DirectX 9 has caused some folks grief because older hardware may not have had driver updates available for quite some time and it is best to keep a compatible version of directX installed with 'vintage' drivers. I use directX 8.1 and graphics drivers of similar age with my old TNT2 graphics card.
I have installed all critical updates to directX, but I have not updated to directX 9.
I suspect you may be experiencing a problem with Java rather than directX, you might try uninstalling all versions of Sun Java Runtime Environment through add/remove programs, reboot then install the latest version. Also, if you are using Microsoft's JVM (old and outdated) rather than Sun Java, you might try setting Sun JRE as default for the browser you are using through Windows Control Panel > Java Control Panel > Advanced tab > applet tag support etc.
If using Firefox it is normal not to be able to give applet tag support to Mozilla (if you don't have Netscape 6-7.x or Mozilla Suite installed), Firefox should detect and use Sun JRE anyway.
