I think Dave is correct.

::Driver Tip::

Heres a tip that saves me some time. I created a folder named Drivers with subfolders for windows 98 thru windows xp. I copied every driver for every peice of hardware i own for each of these operating systems (when available). I burned it to CD but i keep a copy on the extended partitions of each of my HD's.

This way after a fresh install i only have one place to point to to get everything installed. I dont know much about troubleshooting but i can start over with everything intact in about a half hour :). So i guess buying this HP was worth it. It forced me to become an expert at reinstalling.

That is a great Ideal, think since I have these copies handy I have them on a zip drive, I will do the same, except you do unzip them and only put the set-up on the copy right.? or do you put the hole zip there.

I am just getting prepared incase I have to. Sue Strangely enough this Compaq that I formated and installed cleanly, the hardest part or I should say the most time was spent on getting MSNIA installed because the disc has 5.2 which is no longer avail, so it sends you to the 5.3 which has the trayclnt error all the time, then had to delete make another connection to get the 5.6 installed that and it kept cutting me off so got so mad I uninstalled it then made my own and I am keeping it....that took me hours, because the MSN 5.6 has no Idle time to set for a long time and it disconnects you every 20 min or so. Thanks for the Info. Sue

Sue,
I had the same problem with MSNIA. I gave up on it and created the connection manually with the Dial-Up networking wizard.

As far as drivers. I never use the installers. I Find just the driver and let new hardware wizard find it. The reason behind this is becuase i have found that these installers try to load software or useless features. As an example my USR 56K modem comes with an installation disk. This disk tries to install a control center application. Its not neccesary. Windows loads drivers for it by default and the update drivers are only like 2k .inf files.

Printers are the exception to the rule. Ive never been able to get one working properly unless i use the installer.

Locating just the driver might be hard. I know it was for me because of HP and the junk hardware included. Its time consuming at first but once you get it done it saves alot of time in the future.
