Problem: Vector Graphics Rendering (VML)
About 5 weeks ago had to use the system restoration disk to restore windows. Then to update Internet explorer I first installed 5.5 sp2, and then IE6. Since then, when visiting some web pages or certain html documents, I occasionally get a message that I need to download and install "vector graphics rendering (VML)" in order to view the web page properly. Well I must have tried a dozen times over the last few weeks and each time the installation fails, so yesterday I downloaded the whole IE6 package and saved to the disk to do a manual installation. I then tried to manually install the VML component; it failed, and then I tried to reinstall all of the components except medial player 7.1 and language support and all worked but the VML component. Help, any suggestions or ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Robbie, yep this is a very common problem when installing IE6 or upgrading from the 5's to the 6's. Go to GOOGLE and check out the links to the same problem. I also found this microsoft news group for the fix for this possibly. News group Hope this shed's a little light on your problem and how to fix it!! Good Luck!!

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately I have not found a solution that works, yet, but it's a starting point. I quess a worst case scenaro would be to use the restore disk again and not do any upgrades to the internet explorer but I'm not sure if that would restore my vector graphics rendering. I would like to have that function back as it is used with my office/word program to make an occasional web page.
If anyone else can provide any other ideas, I would appreciate the info.
Thanks again

Manually install vector graphics rendering.
1. Create a folder on the C: drive and call it VGX. Do this by
double-clicking on My Computer, then double-clicking on the C: drive.
Right-click on an open spot in that window and select New-->Folder. While the
"New Folder" title is highlighted, type in VGX and press [enter]
2. Extract the following 3 files into the C:\VGX folder: vgx.cat, vgx.inf,
vgx.dll. Do this by searching for the VGX.CAB file on your hard drive.
Double-click on it. Extract the 3 vgx files listed above to C:\VGX.
3. Register the files from step 2 by clicking on Start-->Run, typing in the
following line and clicking Okay:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\VGX\vgx.infThis is all that you have to do in order to install vector graphics rendering.
But it will not stay installed following the next restart unless the values in
the following registry key are correct:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSetup\InstalledComponents\{10072cec-11d1-986e-00a
0c955b42f}Default) "Vector Graphics Rendering (VML)" ComponentID "MSVML" IsInstalled 01 00 00 00 KeyFileName "C:\vgx\vgx.dll" Locale "EN" Version "6,0,2600,0000"
The KeyFileName value does not necessarily have to point to C:\vgx\vgx.dll.
Just confirm that it is a legitimate path to vgx.dll. (And no, a bunch of
percent signs and numbers do not constitute a legitimate path.)

Success at last !!!
A very big thanks to gunntherd and newgrl for your generous assistance. One of the ideas posted on the microsoft newsgroup did the trick. The one by Jim Byrd, option # 3,basically by clearing out the hidden uninstall folder in Programs/IE prior to reinstalling in safe mode.
Thanks again for all the help, I'm all smiles now.
