I've upgraded from IE5.5 to IE6 & have two big problems. I've searched the net for solutions, tried resetting internet options to low security, etc etc. Nothing works.

1. I cannot download anything from any site at all. Download is enabled in internet options. When I try to download I get a message "Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx from xxxx. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

2. Whenever I use a form or some search engines I cannot go back to my results after viewing the first of them. I get a message "Warning. Page has expired ... refresh this page and enter your information again" (or similar). I did find a suggested fix for this but it involves downloading Service Pack 1 for IE6 so I can't do that! (See problem 1) I've also read that this doesn't actually fix the problem anyway.

I would greatly appreciate advice from anyone who thinks they may be able to assist. Madness is just around the corner!

Try an IE repair;

Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/highlight your IE entry,click on the Add-Remove button,choose to "repair".Reboot.

If you can't do that,try;

Start/Run/type;(or copy&paste...must contain the "'s and spaces)

RunDLL32.EXE setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.exe" /g "%SystemRoot%\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

I've heard of many problems with using IE6 on Operating Systems other than XP and the like. You may be better off going back to IE5.5.

Thank you for these replies. I've run the IE6 repair and rebooted. Still can't download anything I'm afraid. (I didn't try the second suggestion re the run command as I assumed that that was an alternative to the IE repair.)

Have just searched out my old free CDs and am very very tempted to reinstall IE5.5 but if anyone has any other suggestions I will gladly try them.

No need to reinstall IE5.5 with a CD (and it probably won't let you downgrade). Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > find "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6" or similar in the list > double-click on it > choose the "Restore the previous Windows configuration" option, and it will revert back to IE5.5.

I had the same exact problem after upgrading to IE 6.0 from 5.5. (When I try to download I get a message "Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx from xxxx. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.")

I tried Repairing 6.0 to no avail. Then, I reverted to 5.5 via the "Restore the previous Windows configuration" option, and was horrified to find that it didn't clear up the problem. Previously to upgrading to 6.0, version 5.5 did not have the problem.

Happily though, I have somehow cleared up the problem. I don't know exactly what it was, though, that I did that cleared up the problem. I was trying many things, but I suspect that the problem was cleared up when I was doing the following:

1. Actually, I found that IE 6.0 (and later 5.5) wasn't able to do HTTP downloads. However, ftp downloads were working. I went to "ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.0/windows/win32/", copied the NSSetup.exe program to my desktop, and then ran the setup program. This allowed me to install Netscape 7.0 on my system.

2. Netscape installs a "Java Plug-in", which appeared in my Control Panel. I was surprised to find 2 "Java Plug-in" control panels in the Control Panel folder. I went to the "About" box of each "Java Plug-in" control panel and found that one was version 1.4.0 and the other was version 1.4.1.

3. I opened the Java Plugin version 1.4.0 control panel, clicked on the "Browser" tab, and found that "Netscape" was checked. I left it checked.

4. I opened the Java Plugin version 1.4.1 control panel, clicked on the "Browser" tab, and found that "Microsoft Internet Explorer" was checked. I unchecked "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and checked "Netscape" instead. I applied the change.

5. I surmised from (4) above that JRE 1.4.0 version was installed by Netscape. I remembered that JRE 1.4.1 was installed but hadn't realized that it was set as the default JRE for Microsoft IE.

6. I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and found 2 Java Runtime Environment entries. One was for version 1.4.0 and the other 1.4.1. I removed the 1.4.0.

7. After rebooting, I tried IE 5.5 again, and found it able to http download files.

So, in summary, I think the problem was caused by the "Java Plug-in" being used as the default Java Runtime for Microsoft Internet Explorer.

I'm now trying to upgrade to IE 6.0 again and see what happens.
