found myself in that very ugly place that's been addressed here before and followed recommendations to reinstall ME over itself
But more probs:
while trying to reload the computer freezes in ScanDisk -- as it begins scanning directory structure (it's completed media descriptor and file allocation tables)any ideas???

i had the same problem, 1 of the other programs is conflicting wit it. in the bottom right hand corner of u're screen there is a bunch of simbles 4 all the programs running. right click each one and click exit or somethin to turn it off. then run scan disk again, if it dont work, its probably windows. win me sucks, its always glitchin up on people. by the way, scandisk barely does anything. its a peice of crap

guess i should be more specific -- i got caught with only blue screen on WinME after trying to fix IE6. followed advice on:
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/24847.html
so trying to reinstall ME from DOS, and now stuck in scandisk -- totally frozen up and still unable to get into Windows.

hello
with your boot disk(floppy) in drive reboot
click with out cd-rom suport,at the a:sys c:
click enter reboot if it said system tranferd.
if not try a:scanreg /restore click enter
a good registry restore point will have started beside it you have 5 of these set by default and each new day you try to start computer you loose one older restore point.
allso to get your computer out of scan disk in dos click ctrl, alt, delete with boot disk removed.
there is a way to do system restore from boot disk but ive lost the link at the microsoft sight do search for it.
one of these should but no garentee fix this screw up
have a nice day

There were posts in this forum warning everyone not try uninstall IE6 and go back
to IE5.5 in WinME.
90% you have to format, install OS again.
If you have IE5.5 SP2 stay there.
If you upgraded to IE6 stay there even with minor problems,if you are not feeling that it's time for a new installation.
I found IE5.5 SP2 more stable than IE6.
