Trying to install IE6 failed and corrupted IE5
I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled WinMe.
I am now tring to update to IE6 and doing so seemed to screw things up.
I went to the windows update website and downloaded ie6setup.exe.
I then selected to install all components includinding all language display options.
It began to download and then soon froze.
Since then I have attempted repeating the proccess using different install options each time and still no success.
Also since I attempted this IE will only work for a little while and then it will not access the net at all.
I am being forced to use the compserve browsing software to write this letter and access the net in general but even that tactic does not work for long before it freezes up.
So what can I do to reverse the damage done by the attempted IE6 install?
What caused this to happen in the first place?
How can I prevent this from happening again?
Is there any place I can go to download a copy of the full IE6 install that will let me download with a reliable download manager instead of IE?

P.S. I was just forced to disconnect from the internet, reboot, reconnect, open the newgroup again, and then post my message because it froze up while I was writing this the first time.

Try running "ieradicator" from http://www.litepc.com/ and then install IE6. I would install Mozilla and use it to get ieradicator and to have a browser until you get things sorted out. "Ieradicator" does exactly what is says--there will be no IE left on your system!

The problem is that I cannot download the IE6 install software from windows update.
They want you to use IE and I cant because of this situation.
If I could get ahold of an IE6 install package then I could try that.
I dont want to delete IE becuase some sites I know of only allow downloading via IE to avoid leachers.

I thought that for some reason your IE5.5 gets corrupted every time you try to upgrade to 6.0. You choice is to just use 5.5 and forget about upgrading, or try ieradicator to resolve your corruption issue. You can then download and install IE6. It has worked for many others including myself. You can use the search feature of this forum to see if there are any other ideas, but this method has worked for me and other people.

Glad you like Mozilla, let us know if you need any help with it.

I would suggest unchecking prefetch links especially if you're on dial up, should speed things up significantly. Edit>preferences>advanced>cache>uncheck prefetch links (or similar)>click okay.

I might have advised you install IE6 so you could get your Windows Updates.

I never had to use IEradicator, thought about it a couple of times, but some programs need IE to work properly (from what I've read).

Just a little info, for those, that didn't know.

Double-click the "ie6setup.exe", accept the agreement, and choose install minimal or custom (worded something like that), not install now. Then click the "Advanced" (button), on the following. Then mark "Download only". I think, the rest can be figured out. ;-) That works, for IE5.5 Sp2 also. Hmmm, I just wonder, if that would work, for 95, 98/SE IE5.5 Sp2 ;-)

Good Luck All,
S.T.A.R.

Well I now figure I it needs IE then I dont need it. I have not noticed any errors other than Compuserve now gives an error that says "a compuserve tool could not be loaded" but it connects just fine so I could care less what its problem is. I dont like Compuserve anyway. 7.0 installs junk files in C:\ and in \desktop\ and in \Program Files\ and it does not ask permission to do so. Compuserve 7.0 also does a stealth install of RealPlayer Basic. It never asks permission to do this and there is no option to install the internet software without RPB. Of course RPB adds itself to your startup group also wothout asking permission. The only way I knew this installation had occured was that I just happen to check my installed programs in the add/remove program dialog box and there it was.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, open source projects are so much more satisfying. Power to the people, lol.
