Hi there good Gurus,
I can't get onto the net with IE5.5. I just get a page not available message.
I also have Netscape 7.1 and opera 7 installed. Both connect to the internet with NO problem.
I tried reinstalling IE5.5 but no change, still can't use it to connect to the net.

Anyone got any ideas?
Thank you
Fred

Try running Adaware 6 to remove any spyware that may have infiltrated IE.

Antivirus may also be in order.

If that doesn't do it try installing IE6 SP1.

Fred,

Some other things, to ponder.

Is IE, set as the default browser?

Do you run a fire wall? And if you do, does IE have permission to access the net.

So, you are truely connected, but just can't browse the internet. Is this what you are saying?

How are you connecting to the internet? dial-up, DSL, cable, through a network, ect.

What 'exact' version of IE, are you running? Well, trying to, that is. Open IE, click "Help", then "About Internet Explorer". What does it say, for Version:?

The virtue lies in the struggle, not in the prize

Thank you Darkfriend and Crazy one for tips.

First to darkfriend.

1. Yes I ran adaware 6, there was a bit of spyware called Alexa ( probably installed by Download manager Net Vampire ) which I have just removed and then run Adaware6 again . This time no detected unwanted thingies.

2. I also ran spybot 1.2 update today, nothing found.

3. Ran my antivirus AVG(update yesterday) on two directories, ; Windows and Program archives.... no virus.

Dear Crazyone

1.
Yes I made IE5.5 my default and ran it, but when I try to go to a page, any page, e.g. google, I get the following message

ººººººººººººº
The page cannot be displayed
-------------
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. "
ººººººººººººººººº

Obviously not true as when I immediately start Opera, I go direct to google.

2.
I used to have ZoneLab, but it started doing funny things to my PC, like
a. cutting off connection to the NET when attacked.....GOOD.....but
b. Spending 2 hours tying to remove all the locks it puts in your system....BAD

3. Truly connected but can't go anywhere with IE. .....as above Opera and Netscape connect immediately

This is very mysterious

4. I have a 56k modem and connect to the net with a simple dial up line, ISP is terra24, not brain shattering but fast enough for me.

5.
Clicking about shows that the version is:-

Version 5.50.4134.0600

ªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªª

A last bit of information.

I use the Frontpage that came with the winME, for creating wysiwyg html pages. The FrontPage version is
4.0.2.2717.
Now before after editing a given page, then saving in the file menu with Preview it called up IE5.5 to see the result of the changes.
Now, when I call IE5.5 for a net Preview, FrontPage simply hangs.

If however I start IE5.5 first, then from FrontPage call IE5.5 preview, I get my page shown correctly in IE5.5...

I can't think of anything else , well Darkfriend offered updating to IE6. Unfortunately this is a program which gave me a lot of problems and I had to reformat the HD to get rid if it.

But any way, many thanks to both of you for having taken the time to reply to my plea

(and I must disagree slightly with you Crazyone......
I mean hitting your head against a wall, even for fun, gets boring and costs a fortune in Aspirins)

Cheers
Fred

LOL... That is most definitely true. But some, sometimes hitting your/their head against a wall, is what it takes :-)

Maybe, just maybe this might prove useful.

Thanks for the laugh,
CrazyOne

Thank you both for help.

Unfortunately this is the end of the line for IE5.5 As I don't want to move to higher/better/newer versions which screeam at you "if you try and ininstall me your windows is doomed."
This sounds like to me as a powerful reason to chuck windows and use Linux, still that is another story.

So, for me, I am closing the thread and using Netscape or Opera to surf the net with no problems.

Bye all and Thanks a 1E6

Fred
