tomd63, suspect the same nasty that did the hijack locked your toolbar. Rightclick on a blank area of the toolbar and see if you can get into 'properties' to unlock it. Then chances are once you have a clean machine, it won't lock again. Don't forget about 'restore'. Your nasty might be able to 'hide' there.

Download the set up file for the latest version of IE. Before you run it do the following:

Maunally go the IE directory in Program Files. delete it.

Then restart, then install IE fresh.

That may help you.

Ok marky81..WHAT

A question for you. Help me understand/explain to me, how a setup file 1) is going to install the latest browser 2) If it can't, how are they going to connect to the internet hmm that setup file is going to connect them to the net and download the needed files for install..is that what you're saying

Sorry you've lost me, let me try to explain again.

1. Go on the internet.

2. look for a downloadable version of IE6 (should be a setup file).

3. download it.

4. Before installing it, go to c:\program files and delete the internet explorer directory.

5. run the NEWLEY DOWNLOADED setup file and install IE again.

In otherwords, your removing your current copy of internet explorer (the one with the locked toolbar) and reinstalling a new version - which will be unhacked/locked.

Make more sense?

marky81,

1. OK

2. That's were you could be causing problems. If you download just the "setup file". e.g. from MS That's all it is, is a setup file. Not the files needed to install the browser. You could download the "setup file" from MS. Then use it to either download the files for a later instalation. Or use it to install the browser while online. So basicaly, you meant the IE6 install package, and not just the setup file, correct.

3. OK

4. That, would cause more problems than just a locked toolbar.

5. Yes, run the new ie6setup.exe, in the install package.

"In otherwords, your removing your current copy of internet explorer (the one with the locked toolbar) and reinstalling a new version - which will be unhacked/locked"

An opinion, no, the way you descibe you're not removing the current browser properly. Which could (will), cause all kinds of problems.

Why not use the IE repair option?? If that doesn't help, then uninstall/remove the current. If, if the files haven't been deleted. They will be on the hard drive, to either fix, or reinstall the browser. That folder will contain all the files needed to install the browser. Updates, that's another issue.

tomd63,

Do you have any programs/utilities for tweaking/security, that might be doing this? That you know of anyway.

Have you tried to repair/fix your current browser, by using/doing this,

Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Double-click the 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 .....' That will then give you an option for "Repair". Mark/choose that option, and follow through. Do that all, with things shut down, not running ect. ect.

Here, have a look at this,

Good luck

S.T.A.R.

Not sure I get why it's a problem that it downloads the setup files from the net?

Believe it or not, I was aware of this. I just don't see why it's relevant. Just because you didn't see the solution yourself isn't a reason to be rude.

"An opinion, no, the way you descibe you're not removing the current browser properly. Which could (will), cause all kinds of problems."

I have done this before. Clearly, you haven't. The same thing has happened to me before. It's called experience.

Good luck TomD63, hope you solve your problem.

marky81,

Where to begin---

"Not sure I get why it's a problem that it downloads the setup files from the net?"

Let's see, that's the first/only time you referenced the setup files. You always said, just the setup file. (Singular) Made NO reference to it (iesetup file)downloading any files. (hmm, I did)

"Believe it or not, I was aware of this."

So, if you were aware of this then. Why didn't you tell the person you were helping, you didn't.

"I just don't see why it's relevant."

I'm glad for you, that you've never had a bad download. You know, I guess you don't, download something and it gets corrupted in the process. I do recall, and went back and looked to make sure (response 4). What if they can't/couldn't connect with this setup file they downloaded. Oh, I know, use IE and downloaded another setup (good) file and try again. No, wait, I deleted that (and others), darn. Not to mention...nevermind

"I have done this before. Clearly, you haven't"

If you mean removing programs, by deleting their folders. Yes, I'd say that is clear, that I don't do that way. There is an exception to that, but, this isn't it.

As for seeing the solution...Without knowing what has been done/tried. It can be problematic doing this in this setting. Hands on, that's a whole different thing.

And I wasn't trying to be "rude".

lol...no comment..about experience..lol

"Good luck TomD63, hope you solve your problem"

In their last follow up, they had said they solved the problem.
