Comment:
When I start my computer I get a message saying "Some componets of active shield are invalid or missing, reinstall active shield to continue." Also internet explorer opens automaticaly. I have recently done a system restore because my computer would only display 600X480 in 16 color. This computer wasn't bought by me, I got it after it was in storage for 2 years. I have tried using search, for any programs with either active, or McAfee in the title, as far as i can see I have deleted everything. Unless it is something to do with activex? As to the IE problem, I right clicked on properties for the icon but i couldn't find any way of making it not open at start up. i tried runing msconfig but i couldn't figure out what to box to check. I didn't see anything that looked like IE. any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated
Personally, I'd uninstall it & Mcafee (if present) - if you just deleted stuff (as you claim), well, that is a bad approach and often leaves a mess. Performing a system restore after uninstalling something can amount to the same thing, depending.
If that's the case, you can either try and hunt through the registry and startups to remove all traces, or else download and reinstall the program (if possible), then uninstall it
If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers
I use McAfee and know all about ActiveShield. Basically, ActiveShield is a real time virus scan of your hard drive as it or you accesses and saves files to the computer and will immediately delete a virus if found. It only scans files in use, not the whole computer. It's a very useful tool. If you plan on using this computer on the net, try to find another way to reinstall McAfee as it's way better than Norton.
This computer has many issues and may be ready for the ultimate solution. Backup your data and reinstall the operating system on a freshly formatted drive.
With a previous owner and unknown history, just go for it.
thank you for all the suggestions and help. this is probably one of the most useful websites on the net. I tried looking through all 18900 files on my computer to delete anything i didn't want but the error message remains. (I know better than to delete something if i don't know what it is) i can not reinstall the op system as no software came with the computer. does anyone know where i can buy a copy of windows ME or 98? thank you once agian for all your help
