I tried to execute this fix provided by Krystyna,to no avail;
The little icons are called FAVICONS and are stored in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
( but not for long )
When a site first puts one on, while online, go to the TIF folder and search for favicon.
Sometimes, the wrong picture icon will be showing for the favicon, just check the properties.
Copy and paste the favicon to a new folder in Windows - call it C:\Windows\Favicons, and then rename the icon from favicon.ico to the appropriate site eg Yahoo.ico

Then, go to C:\Windows\Favorites and click the shortcut link you want to edit
eg to change the Yahoo shortcut to always show the red Y icon
1. Right click the Yahoo shortcut
2. Left click properties
3. Left click Change icon
4. Browse to C:\Windows\Favicons
5. Click the yahoo.ico
6. Click OK

There you have it.
The cute little red Y icon will show up forever more.
Do the same each time you find a favicon you want to save permanently.

>I cannot find any files in TIF as mentioned.I did, however take the file from favorites,(the only place I could find the sites' icon, when first visited),copied it to the new folder I created,(Fav_icons),renamed them yahoo.ico,google.ico,etc...,then replaced the ones in Favorites that I originally began with. This worked fine until I got on this a.m.,only to find they're all back to the default(lil' page, blue e).
Can anybody tell me how to remedy this,or what I've done wrong?

Thanx

The Kid - lol, Took me a while to figure it but this is what you do.

Click on the shortcut/fav > bring page up.
Delete shortcut/fav > Then re add it to fav list.
Then go into Temp Int Files and Favicon will be there ....or it is for me.
Carry out rest of instructions.

Hi guys
I guess I did fail to mention it does take a bit of fiddling about to get the favicons to show up.
Viking, you worked it out right - delete the shortcut then put it back.
It seems the site will only put up a Favicon the once - unless you empty out TIF and then delete the favorite link - and then add it again to get the favicon back in TIF.
I first did this in Win 95, so I forgot how easy it wasn't !!

It seems after 5-10 attempts from different sites, successful or not,my pc would freeze.I would have to C+A+D and close IE to get out.Any clues on this?
Also, how can I get icons from the internet, which seem to usually be GIF's,and save/get them to where I can use them for IE favorites? And can I use some I've already saved?
Thanx

Any icons that are GIFs would need to be resaved with ICO extension.
IrfanView is a good FREE program for this.
www.irfanview.com
After you have got the favicon from TIF and copied and pasted it to your new FAVICONS folder, the rest of the editing can all be done offline through Windows Explorer, in C:\Windows\Favorites
This might stop IE freezing up if you were bouncing between folders, while online.
You can use any icon you like for your Favorites.
When you click "ChangeIcon" just browse to wherever you have the icons, choose what you want, and click OK
You can get icons from EXE, DLL, BMP or ICO files.
Windows has some icon libraries already for you to choose from
C:\Windows\Moricons.dll
C:\Windows\Progman.exe
C:\Windows\System\Pifmgr.dll
C:\Windows\System\Quartz.dll
C:\Windows\System\Shell32.dll
