i get this message:
Iexplore has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL
Iexplore will now close
If you continue to experiance problems
try restarting your computerthis message wont go away! (even using CtrlAltDel) and i cant shut down or restart my PC.. this is really starting to annoy me... help PLEASE!!! (im running ie5.5 on Me)

First, delete the cache and history because corrupt stored files can cause this. In IE go to Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, Check box marked Delete all offline content, click OK. Then click on Clear History as well. Then go to C:Windows/Temporary internet files and delete anything left, mainly cookies. A corrupt ActiveX control may also cause this error. In IE, select Tools, Internet options and click Settings and View Objects. Choose View Details. If you see Active X items described as damaged right click each one and remove it. If there are no damaged items update each by right clicking it and selecting update and going online.
If there is still a problem, repeat the deletion to include the hidden index.dat files using the method suggested here http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/63127.html response number 44.
Also delete everything in your C:\Windows\Temp folder after ensuring that hidden files are showing (if you don’t know how, go to Windows help index and search for “hidden files and folders, showing”)

By the way, I forgot to mention to run adaware to see if you have any trojans in your system and to get rid of them. See this post, point 16
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/18106.html
Please post back how you get on.

After you delete all the temporary internet files and cookies as suggested above go to the add/remove programs and select Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and internet tools.
click remove. You will get a prompt to ADD,REPAIR OR RESTORE.
You choose Repair. The computer will restart.
If this does not work, do it again only this time choose RESTORE and after you will have to go back to microsoft update and download the SP2 service pack....close the antivirus and firewall when downloading the sp2 or you will have trouble with the virtual basic scripting portion of the download

I've had this error from time to time but have Internet Explorer 6 installed with Windows Me. I've seen advice that upgrading from version 5.5 to version 6 will prevent the problem but this is not the case.
