I am not sure if I got to the problem or not (I can get onto the internet, but I keep getting error message, cannot find page, it also says dns error). After talking to HP Tech on the phone, he said I should do a distant recovery of IE, he said it should be on my HP recovery CD. If something gets screwed up, I can't get on the internet for help (I am doing this from work). Does anyone have any suggestions. (I did try suggestions given yesterday)

first off if your getting DNS server errors your internet settings/IE setting for internet access are wrong. when u send a request to go to a site ex www.here.com it gos to a dns server to translate that www. address into a IP address (10.0.0.1) your problem is your browser cant find your ISP's DNS server:)

What can I do about that. I did call my ISP, they told me a couple of things to do (didn't work). Maybe this is a new problem and they don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. As I have said I can't get into the internet at home, so I have to try to figure it out here and then go home and try it.

To correct this, go to Dial Up Networking and right click on the relevant isp icon. With the left mouse button, select properties. Now click on the server types tab. Click on the TCP/IP settings button, and ensure that the settings are as follows:

Server assigned IP address should have a dot next to it
Server assigned name server addresses should have a dot next to it
Use IP header compression should not have a dot next to it
Use default gateway on remote network should have a dot next to it

Once you have made any necessary changes, click on ok and ok again. Close the Dial Up Networking window.

Thank you, but I tried that. It didn't work. Do you know if IE would be on the HP recovery disks?

Did you recently upgrade AOL or your Operating System?

If I understand you correctly... you have a dial-up internet account. You click on something to connect. The modem dials out and you connect to your ISP. After that, when you try to browse, you get "Page cannot be displayed" or "Action Canceled". If this sounds like your problem... follow these instructions.... in order...

Go to start>>settings>>control panel.
Double click add/remove programs.
Go to the Windows Setup tab at the top.
Double click on Communications(the word... not the check mark box).
Take the checkmark out of Dial-up Networking.
Click OK
Click Apply>>OK.

It will ask you if you want to reboot. Say NO.

Leave the contol panel up.
Go to start>>run.
Type regedit and click ok.
On the left hand side of the split screen click the plus signs by these items:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
System
CurrentControlSet
Services

Towards the bottom of that list you will see a folder called Winsock2.
Click on it to select it (not double click. only single.)

At the top of the registry editor you will see: file, edit, view... etc.
Click on File>>Export Registry file.
The save in box is a drop down menu... Choose your desktop.
Call the file backup.
Click save.

Now... go back to the Winsock2 folder.
Right click and choose delete.
Say "yes" to delete the key.
Close the registry editor.

Back in the Control Panel... Double click add/remove programs.
Go to the Windows Setup tab.
Double click Communications.
Put a checkmark in Dial-up Networking.
Click ok.
If it asks... supply it with your Windows 98 cd so it can reinstall Dial up Networking.
Click apply>>ok.

Say YES to the reboot this time.

When you are up, connect to your ISP and try to browse.
