I've been very careful about IE and have always downloaded the latest bug fixes and security patches from Windows Update.
Sometimes when IE started acting peculiar, I'd go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, click on repair, and it would do so.
When my back button was balky recently, I tried to repair IE and got a message that it could not be repaired because there were 18 files with this message: version 5.50.442.1800 of file [filename] exists, but the version needs to be greater than 5.50.4807.2300
I downloaded and reinstalled 5.5 Service Pack 2, but it didn't make any difference.
I don't know why this is; the only things different are that I switched from AOL to AT&T Worldnet, and I removed Norton System Works 2001 (not an easy task!) and installed the 2002 version. I don't know why either of these things whould have anything to do with not being able to repair IE 5.5, except that AT&T may have done something to IE 5.5 (it at least "re-branded" it) when I installed the software.
Any ideas on what I can do to restore repairability?
At the Windows Update site, although I see previous things I installed, I don't see where I have the option to download IE 5.5 and reinstall the whole thing, plus patches and service packs.
Right now, I'm not eager to try IE 6.

You probably can't download 5.5 because 6 is current version. It is probably your only hope short of reinstalling ME.
