IE 5.5 & 6.0 Won't Install
Name: jim sus Date: September 22, 2002 at 19:59:53 Pacific OS: WinMe CPU/Ram: PIII/256
Comment:
Attempt to upgrade IE 5.5 SR1, IE 6.0 and both will download okay but only get 75% of the way thru Install Components. Then CPU goes to 100%, disk traffic goes to 0 for hours (all night). I've tried both the 5.5 SR1 and 6.0 at least twice.
I have NAV (current) and NU 2001, but shut down CleanSweep and have NAV disabled.

The symptoms are a little different, but I could not upgrade from IE5.5 to IE6. My ISP is JUNO, which uses a modified version of IE5.Turns out that my JUNO browser had a problem in one of it's (IE5.5) files. After I re-installed JUNO, then IE6 installed ok. You might try checking out if your ISP has a similar problem. --911

Thanks Dave and 911. I'll find a copy of 5.5 and uninstall and reinstall from that. Here's hopeing.
911: I found out how to do a "Clean Boot" on MS's ME site last night and tried that. Still no luck. It was the thing to do though; was worried about all that AV stuff blocking the install. Thanks.

Solution: there were 32,424 .inf files with zero length that WinME hadn't cleaned up. Deleted them and install went just fine.
This is a known problem. See MS KnoledgeBase Q281967.
