Icons mixed up

The icons on my desktop are mixed up. The ms word docs have dial up network icons, the dial up aliases have autocad icons, ... I don't have any viruses - I ran Norten with the latest update from their site. And now the machine will only come up in safe mode. I tried doing a system restore and it said that noting had changed. Any ideas? TIA
