My icons for all of my text files in my PC have suddenly changed and I was wondering if it was possible to change them back to what they were, the notepad icon. Please help.

Hold shift and right click a text file, choose open with, put a checkmark in "always use this program..." and choose notepad in the list and click okay.

Leroi's advice is always good...but,I'm guessing that's not your problem.
I believe, from the info you gave, that your "shelliconcache" file has become too large or is corrupted. Here's 3 things to try,all of which will achieve the same thing,in the event that Leroi's advice doesn't resolve your conundrum.
1)Right-click on an empty space of your desktop, select Properties/Settings,change the Color settings,Apply and OK out...then,change them back.
2)Boot/Reboot to Safe Mode, then reboot to Normal Mode
3)Perform a search of your HDD for the "shelliconcache" file...(It is a hidden file, and you may have to go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab and check "show all hidden files and folders" before you can see it)...when you find it,immediately reboot.Windows will re-create it.

The icons change suddenly to one same icon because of your RAM. When you computer is low in RAM, the icons all change to one icon to free up RAM. Try not to open that much programs or download RAMbooster athttp://download.com.com/3000-2086-1400043.html?tag=lst-4-2. I have had this same problem many times before, and this works perfectly in fixing the icons.

Or, use tweak software like X-Setup [www.x-setup.net] to set the icon cache.
It works for me.
PS.:
I've already try RAM management software (eg.: MemDefrag, MemoryOptimizer, or MemoryBoost) to solve this symptom, but since the software only "manage" RAM - not my Win98SE System Resource - it doesn't works for the icon change problem.
Hope it'll be useful..!
