been into tweak UI but can only see an option to repair them. My Icons are fine I just want to get rid of the arrows at the bottom left hand corner.

While it is east to remove the arrows using TweakUI it is preferable not to. The arrow indicate it a shortcut to a program and that the program is not installed on the desktop in which case the arrow will not be there.
If you need to get to the program folder just right click on the shortcut, properties and find target; you will be taken to the folder with the program.
I have many icons on desktop [more than 50 in my last count] and more than icons I find text labling more easy to read and identify. Ofcourse for fewer icons it may not make any difference.

Open TweakUI, click on Explorer, then in shortcut overlay put a dot in none.

Open the Registry by running REGEDIT.exe , which you will find at C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\REGEDIT.exe & which you can also put onto your Start Menu, and go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ lnkfile ... and delete the value ... IsShortcut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ piffile ... and delete the value ... IsShortcut
Close the Registry Editor and Re-Boot your computer.
Summary: If the problem is on a Compaq and you are using the onboard sound, then browse to the C: drive/CPQS/quicksr/QRWIN then open WinQRme and hover you're arrow over the cube and then open the soundmax icon...
