HP has some drivers for HP hardware and updates for problems. You should be able to find the drivers for the sound, video etc.from the motherboard manufacturer(VIA).The recovery cd you are trying to find may be difficult to find second hand.I would go for a used full copy of Win 98,98SE or ME from the second hand market and complete the setup with drivers from HP and other sources.Install Lavalys Everest Home edition to find the name and model # of your hardware. From this information you can find the missing drivers on the web.Copy these programs to a cdr or cdrw.It is quite a task that will take some of your time but it is not a difficult one if you can access the web and copy the files to a cd.

If you got an abnormal program termination with the recovery cd,HP recommends partitioning the hard drive.See above ref.about this and how to get the recovery cd from HP and other problems related to the use of the recovery cd.The cd is sold on the web by HP and paid for with a credit card.
When you search the HP site enter the words "Pavilion 7855" etc.http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07143&product=61188&dlc=en&lang=en
My guess is it is probably cheaper to find a used full copy of Windows plus the drivers from the web.
Good luck.

You should be able to get a set of recovery disk from hp for little or nothing. I just got a set from compaq(hp now) for a system thats warranty had run out and was also preinstalled, windows xp . Cost $15.00 plus shipping for a total of $22.00 on a two day delivery. The phone number was 800-231-0900 or 800-841-2761 if you are in the USA.

Message for Katherine:
I have the same problem;disk 1 gets a 'faulty disk' or whatever report. Have not gotten to disk 2. If your disk 1 is OK, perhaps we can exchange to come up with a working set. I tried the phone number from "jabuck", but no luck.Dan
