I have a anitexe virus in my memory. I tried Mcaffe antivirus and it says its un removeable. So I ran a clean dos boot disk and ran scan.exe. It told me to check my partoion tables or something like that. Windows ME is running in dos real mode and slowing the computer drastically! Please help!
Thanx Jeff

boot off an ME startup disk and type fdisk /mbr then do a standard fdisk after rebooting and if you dont have 2 partitions make 2. then reformat and reinstall the os.

I had the Antiexe virus and my old IBM Antivirus got rid of it. Caught it from an old 286 laptop I bought for $20. Suppose I could email a copy of the files so you can make your own boot disk from it (boots and checks for viruses) if you wanted.

I have no advice in the way of helping(I've been there twice with trojans and once w/a virus, but I get a weekly update on the latest'bugs that are out there from Micro Trend,(I think thats it ). The first HTTP is the web site, and the secound is an online test they do to your system, and I think the'll help you, which is more then Norton did for me, they only told me,yep its a virus, then I was on my own. Good Luck,

You can make a set of bootable disk to run pc-cillin at this site. Select emergency clean disk. It's free and I've used it many times with pretty good success.

The above is a link with a summary of the virus and removal instructions. A boot disk actually will access the hard drive on bootup, and for that reason the virus may be loaded in memory but just not active.
For this reason you will need to Hit F8 on startup to access the boot menu (when using the boot disk of course) and selecting "Step-by-step confirmation" and not running autoexec.bat file.
At this point it will depend on what virus scan you have... McAfee's is what I have used and had no problems when following these instructions. Norton AV I do not trust as it has missed a number of viruses I had when I had it installed. Trend's PC-Cillin is another I would trust as it has worked well when I have used it as well.
Good luck...

Just to point out the differences in perceptions about software:
"RJCE Home"'s comments about Norton are just the opposite from my experiences.
Among my other duties I'm "computer guy" for about 28 computers at work.
Most of them have McAfee VirusScan (unfortunately)
McAfee software has a lot of little bugs that really undermines confidence in their product.
It doesn't report the proper version of the scan engine, it doesn't recognize that the system has ever had a full scan (To quote McAfee: "Uh...yeah...bugs in the software.")
Last year their upgrade came with improper installation instructions. I had to manually uninstall McAfee on 18 computers. This included editing the Registry and deleting 128 occurrences of a 32 character alpha-numeric string. This manual install was done twice because they sent me the wrong instructions the first time.
Response to tech support email has taken over
three weeks, at times (when you can find the proper links on their web site. Enjoy puzzles? Try to find free tech support sometime)
Norton provides an MUCH better web site & technical support.
And tons of virus info & repair utilities.
And will work with you even if you don't have Norton.
I use Norton at home (and 3-4 'puters at work) and have never had the problems that I have had with McAfee (on everything from Win95 to WimME/2000)
