If it shows two modems go into the system device manager and see if two modems show under modem delete the on that is not yours. Two modems here can cause problems.

Before creating an internet connection, make sure the computer can see and use the modem driver. To do this:

Go to control panel>>modems
Click on the Diagnostic tab.
Highlight the Com port your modem is installed on and click More Info.

You should see "Communicating with modem this may take a few minutes..."
Then a box should come up with a bunch of lines starting with "AT".

If that is not what happens, your modem driver is not being used with your modem device.

Have a look in device manager (right click my computer>>properties). Make sure there is not a "PCI communications device". If there is, that is your modem and there is no driver assigned to it.

To fix this...

Remove all the entries in device manager that pertain to your modem.
Put your Modem driver cd in the drive.
If if it autoruns, cancel out of whatever comes up.
Double click on PCI communications device.
Click Reinstall Driver.
Choose Display a List.
Next.
Choose Modems, click Next.
Click the Have Disk button.
Click Browse.
Browse your modem driver cd to the INF file associated with your driver (without actually seeing what's on the disk or knowing what kind of modem you have... that's the best I can do. It is generally in something like d:\drivers\win9x... but not always).
Click ok.
Click ok.

The wizard should find your driver and install your modem properly.

If all else fails... there is almost always a README.TXT on the modem driver cd. Read it for instructions on how to install your driver.
