I'm a newbie so please forgive me if this is a obvious question. When I open some files with ms notepad the only thing I can read is 'will not run in DOS' everthing else is in symbols, is this a computer language or encption or what. Is something I should wonder about or just leave alone. Larry

What types of files are you trying to open? Not all types of files are meant to be opened with notepad.

"When I open some files... "

Notepad is a (kind of crappy) text editor - if you're opening executable files (you can tell by their extension), you're not likely to see much in the way of text, just code.

There's no compelling reason to open those kinds of files - unless you're a programmer - but in that case, you wouldn't be using Notepad

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

You should not be messing around with those files if you do not know what you're doing.

To all that responded thank you very much, I will keep my nose out of where it does not belong. Larry
