Some how I removed RUN from the start menu. It is not in my task bar menu to be selected.I asked a few weeks ago and someone sent me a REG
file. I installed it a clicked ok and I still can't find RUN.

Have you looked in taskbar and start menu advanced properties (right click the taskbar>properties>advanced) to see if the option is checked to display run in the start menu?
If so and it is already checked, uncheck it, click apply and okay, reboot then reverse the process to see if run is then displayed.

This isn't a fix but an alternative if you can't get the run option back
Press the Winkey+R
It will bring up the run box.

Hi David, Leroi, Tom, hello everyone,
David,
Go to the following key in the registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
In the right pane look for NoRun.
Double click on it and change the Value from 1 to 0.
Restart the computer.
Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi David, hello everyone,
David,
First, don't delete anything in the registry, at least for this problem. All you are going to do for this issue is change the Value Data.
Second, understand how to backup and restore the registry before doing anything.
How to backup and restore the registry
http://www.mesich.com/backupreg.htmlTo enter the registry go to Start and Run.
Type regedit and click OK.Best Regards,
Mesich

David,
Try going to "c:\windows", and double-click "regedit.exe". See if that open registry editor. Would be "regedit", if extensions aren't shown.

David,
If you still are having problems. You might try this.
Open notepad, and click "Edit". If there's a check in front of "Word Wrap", click "Word Wrap", so there isn't a check.
Now, copy REGEDIT4, all the way through @=""" and paste it into notepad. Click "File", then "Save As". Name this RUN1.reg and set where to save it. Now close notepad and open notepad again. Do the same, but start with the second REGEDIT4, and copy all the way through "StartMenuRun"=dword:00000001
Save that as RUN2.reg Now merge both of these reg files you made, into your registry. Right-click the file, then click "Merge", and follow through. Or double-click the files, and follow through.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\StartMenuRun]
"Type"="checkbox"
"Text"="Display Run*"
"HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001
"RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Advanced"
"ValueName"="StartMenuRun"
"CheckedValue"=dword:00000001
"UncheckedValue"=dword:00000000
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000001
"HelpID"="windows.hlp#51142"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\StartMenuRun\Policy]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\StartMenu\StartMenu\StartMenuRun\Policy\NoRun]
@=""REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"StartMenuRun"=dword:00000001

CrazyOne don't give up on me now. I suprised my self when I followed your instructions. It said the RUN1 and RUN2 was entered into the registry. I rebooted but no RUN. Do I need another step?

David,
Did the registry editor open, when you double-clicked "regedit.exe"? Also, did you check things, as Mesich advised.
Have you run/installed any tweaking programs? Registry cleaners, or any type of clean-up utilities/programs. What I'm getting at, is one of these might of done this.
When, was the first time you noticed, it was gone? Anything done, just prior to this? This shouldn't have to be asked, but, have you scanned for virus and whatnots.
"I rebooted but no RUN."
After you merged the two reg files, and before you restarted. 1.) Was the "Display Run", showing in the "Advanced" (Tab) of the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", and checked? 2.) Was the "Run...", showing in the start menu?
I hope that "surprise", wasn't caused by my instructions being difficult. If they were hard to understand, I'm sorry.
"Do I need another step?"
If they're showing after the files are merged, and not after a reboot. You could try making a registry backup, before you restart. That's scanregw at run. When it asks, if you want to backup the registry, say yes.
Now, if there's something changing/preventing the run from showing. It's just going to not show, after the restart. If that's the case, we will have to find the culprit.
CrazyOne

You give good instructions CrazyOne. Mesich said to type regedit in RUN. I ran a program to make Win ME run better and not lockup as often 6 months ago. After that I noticed that RUN was gone. I looked in the task bar menu and the advanced tab there isn't a RUN to be selected. When I hit the Win key the start tab comes up and no RUN. I don't know how to get the Regedit.exe. When I merged the 2 files it said that they were excepted. Any ideas?

David,
"I ran a program to make Win ME run better and not lockup as often 6 months ago. After that I noticed that RUN was gone."
"I looked in the task bar menu and the advanced tab there isn't a RUN to be selected."
"I don't know how to get the Regedit.exe."
"Mesich said to type regedit in RUN."
1.) What is the name of this program, and where did you get it from, exactly. And is it still installed?
2.) Just checking. Are you looking for "Display Run", not just "RUN". At the bottom of the "Advanced" (Tab), under "Start menu and Taskbar"
3.) Did you mean, you can't find the "regedit.exe". Did you do a search for it, try with hidden files show. As I said, it should be in "c:\windows". Your windows folder.
Now, if there isn't a "regedit.exe to be found. I WILL ask at this time. Have you scanned for a virus?
You can extract one from the "WIN_17.CAB". A quick way, right-click the "win_17.cab", and then click "Explore". Move your pointer over the "regedit.exe", in the right-hand side. Now, you can either hold your "left" mouse button down on the "regedit.exe", and move it to where you want it copied, and release the button. Or right-click the "regedit.exe", then click "Extract". You will be prompted (asked), "Choose a Folder in which to save the files". Make this "c:\windows", and click OK. Then close the "WIN_17.CAB".
You should then be able to double-click "regedit.exe", and registry editor will open.
4.) Mesich, also gave further instructions at Response 3 & 5.
CrazyOne

Crazyone stay with me. I have scanned for viruses. The program that did this is long gone, I removed it. I did find the regedit and followed Mesich's instructions and got to the NoRun. I clicked on it and there are alot of 00000 and one 1. Should I change the 1 to 0.I can not back up the registry because I don't have RUN.

Hi David, CrazyOne, hello everyone
CrazyOne,
My friend, as always such a fine job. :-)
David,
I appologize for the mix up earlier with the procedure to go to Start and Run.
Obviously, you couldn't do that. :-))
These things do get overlooked when trying to resolve issues from a keyboard and monitor.
We normally get the issue resolved at a much lower cost than that of a local computer shop, we even throw in a smile. :-)
Is the 1 you are refering to within the key, the last number?
Best Regards,
Mesich

David,
"I can not back up the registry because I don't have RUN."
That also can be done, without the Run. Just like you did to open registry editor. But this time it would be "scanregw.exe" Also located in "c:\windows"
Does it look like this;
NoRun 0x00000000(1)
(DWORD Value)If so, yes, double-click the NoRun, and change the "1" to "0". Click OK. If it's a Binary Value do the same, except, put the cursor "|" at the very end of the numbers. Press the back button "once", then the "0"(zero) key once. Click OK.
Hmmm, or it could be deleted altogether. The "NoRun", that is. That's just an opinion. What am I saying, these are all opinions :-)
Good Luck,
CrazyOne
as I slap both sides of my head with my hands, and say "Oh Boy!" ;-)
sorry, needed a little stress relief
:-)
yes, I'll stay with you

mesich,
Whoops!!
I started this and got a phone call, then finished it, and posted. Didn't mean to step on you there :-)
Sorry,
CrazyOne

Hi David, CrazyOne, hello everyone
Change the 1 to a 0 and restart the computer.
You can also delete the NoRun by right clicking on it and selecting Delete.
Best Regards,
Mesich

David,
Looks like you're on the very edge, of solving your problem. Hope all is working correctly for you, and things continue that way. If you run into other problems, just give a shout, and someone should be able to help.
You're Welcome and Good Luck,
CrazyOne
Yes Mesich, at $1.25/minute, it can add up
;-)

Hi David, CrazyOne, hello everyone
I spent over 2 hours last night on a three way conversion with my dad and Bellsouth.
We didn't get the problem corrected but I must say they were knowledgable, listened and just didn't talk.
I posted the problem is the WinXP forum and got a reponse from the very knowledgable Krystyna.
We are going to try one more thing to further isolate the problem and then I shall post in the Win98 forum, my normal hang out. :-)
I'll send you a message when I get it posted, if you would be so kind to give it a look over.
Best Regards,
Mesich
