Comment:
After I installed Windows ME everytime I try to scandisk my C: drive (windows ME is installed in there) it starts to check my folders for 5-10 seconds and it just starts over again and after 10 times doing that I get a message saying that it cannot finish because windows or another program has been writing to this drive and quitting some programs would help scandisk to finish. I closed every program and tray icon and even closed every task except explorer and systray by using ctr+ald+del and still Scandisk can't even get started on my C: ?? What is wrong with it? How can I do scandisk on my C:?

Screensaver off ? The answer is something is writting to the drive. How about how much disk space do you have left ? Could be a virus. ??

You might try another disk scanning program and see if the problem persists. For instance Norton DiskDoctor or Fixit........Like the post above mentioned you may have something writing to disk in the background.

I have a feeling the culprit could be one the things that make Win Me appealing to some and one of the things that Microsoft is so proud of. You know the System Restore feature......well the way that it works is if the system is idle for a certain length of time and or the computer has been running for 24 hours straight it takes a pic of your hard drive...it also does this everytime you successfully boot up. Now for one thing there are other programs out there that do the same thing but do a better job of it. I have a feeling that this is what is causing your scandisk problems. Now although I like the idea of system restore, but it simply hogs too much memory!! So I got to msconfig....a quick way to do this is to goto your start menu then to the run menu....type msconfig in there. Now click on the startup tab and uncheck the PC health program and one called *stateMgr I also believe that is linked to PCHealth....now you will have to reboot for these changes to take effect but the cool thing about this is. if you want to reverse changes and make it as it was before just put the check mark back next to the programs....all it does by removing the checkmark is disable the program...it does not delete it or anything like that. If it were me I would leave it off forever....it sucks so much of your system resources down...but if you really like that feature type.. I would get a program called Go Back...does the same thing, but with lower cpu overhead!! also like Undo said....try another disk utility program such as Norton Utilities 2001 or Norton SystemWorks 2001 (which I have) that does a much better job of scanning and correcting your problems anyway....and make sure you get the 2001 version of Norton because the 2000 version is not fully compatible with Me. I'll also let you in on a little secret....the scandisk program is actually made my Symantec..it's a stripped down version of Norton Utilies!!

Actually if your hard drive was upgraded or is a maxtor or western digital it has a program called EZ-BIOS that will startup before the GUI will and this makes the scandisk either take forever to complete or never will. This is because the boot partition and MBR is a lot different than a normal one. The only options you have are deal with it or get another program. Windows for some reason doesn't like EZ-BIOS, but without it the hard drive won't be recognized by your system.
