Hi all,
I may have a VERY unique opportunity coming up in the near future and require some help. I may have an audience with some upper level mgt before the HP/Compaq merger and would be curious to know what issues you as end users would like addresed.
This is really a golden opportunity to be heard by importand people, but I don't, and have never, owned a HP or Compaq. I HAVE heard the horror stories I would like to hear firsthand whats on your mind.
What sucks and what do you want changed???
Thanks,
Jimi_l

P.S.
KTTD I have posted this is both forums to better my viewing odds. If this is unacceptable then just pull one or the other. Both would be nice tho...

One of my biggest complaints with HP is the lack of toll free support. It can get prettyl expensive having to pay long distance for a call to tech support, and THEN they always wind up putting you on hold while they go look through their books for some kind of solution. Their tech support is sadly lacking, as well. They usually tell you to remove ghost drivers, tell you to use msconfig, which is fine, and then they will have you reformat, instead of trying to actually find out what the errors you are getting are being caused by. Pretty much all of my calls to tech support consist of these solutions. They need better tech support and a toll free number for users to call. I will probably never buy another HP computer, for this reason alone. Next time I'm getting a Dell.

I have several complaints about HP.
Sadly nothing original.

Lack of a real OS.(recovery nonsense)

Forced 3rd party partner software. (real player, trelix web preinstalled)

Drivers...
Getting drivers for HP hardware is a nightmare. A mystery as to who actualy makes the part and locating drivers is just as confusing from the recovery disks. Why cant they just have a tiny little html doc with all drivers available for download or atleast a list? If you ever attempt a clean install of windows you will see what i mean.

FDISK=Restore disk wont work.

As far as hardware i cant complain. Everything is running well for me, the only thing ive changed is a 5.1 sound card and adding an external dialup modem.

Cosmetically i think HP wins hands down in the off the shelf department. Most PC's are just plain ugly but HP has kind of a cool look to it. I know this sounds silly but when your forced to stare at a PC all day i think it helps if it looks cool :). Dell is moving up with the black tower they recently introduced.

I would like to know why they got rid of their forum, it was quite helpful. I do love my HP its old and still ticking, infact I don't have the problems of the newer HP's I have never had a problem, but when I want to upgrade I liked checking problems from other people before I upgraded or how to upgrade different things. My son has a Compaq and when he bought it, it was missing the disk for recovery, have asked several time and they still do not send it they are just interested in selling the new machines now, not the ones they have already sold. Sue

Thank you all for the help and please keep them coming. Kevin requested that they be E-Mailed to me and that too is fine. Whatever the public will bear.
On another note, I posted this identical thread on another board
www.tek-tips.com and was sent a NASTY E-mail about soliciting their members would not be tolerated. The thread was also pulled. Just wanted to let you know that this board's mod(KTTD)was helpful and non judgemental while "other boards" were NOT.BTW the term "solicit" is defined as follows:
so·lic·it (s-lst)
v. so·lic·it·ed, so·lic·it·ing, so·lic·its
v. tr.
1)To seek to obtain by persuasion, entreaty, or formal application: a candidate who solicited votes among the factory workers.
2)To petition persistently; importune: solicited the neighbors for donations.
3)To entice or incite to evil or illegal action.
4)To approach or accost (a person) with an offer of sexual services.

I rebuted this E-mail and started a thread stating why I would no longer return but I am sure it too will be pulled.
Just wanted you all to know that free speach lives here at least!!!

My HP computer came with the wrong recovery disc by their own admission and it took weeks to get the proper one. They were very uncooperative and their tech support is terrible. Might I add I received three different responses and none correct to one of my HP problems, this by e-mail.
My next computer will be a Dell because I understand their support is fine.

include a real windows disk, not some application recovery disk. Also, in my HP xt953, there is only one empty drive slot (two total, but one has the burner)...a case w/at least one more drive slot would've been nice.

TECH SUPPORT!
Tech SuPpOrT!
tECh SuPPort!!
They really are no help at all. I get more help here and on other forums than I ever got from them!
As far as the discs - I think most PCs nowadays don't give you the ME CD (or XP..Whichever!) because it's too easy to install it on more than one PC. In fact I read today that it is in their contracts with M$ that they give recovery CDs. I have no problem with that - as long as it works.
I have a HP Pavilion 7845 which I bought in June of last year.
I like the PC but the OS kinda sucks - Oh well, Don't they all at one time or another?

As far as the forced software - I don't use the ones I don't want to - besides They ALL give you what they want unless you go to a local store and have them put in what you tell them.

I also have a IBM APTIVE from '96 with W95 and it has a recovery disk and stuff I don't want too -It's not a new thing Is It?

Anyway - you tell them...

Tech support..tech support..........

Good luck!

I have had no problems at all with my Compaq 5000.. the ongoing problems I have had are with WinME.

I would be very surprised to learn that Compaq actually builds these things. It looks like a generic made overseas rectangular computer with a glossy plastic face stuck on.
